10 Most Powerful X-Men Characters Who Are Related to Mystique (Ranked Weakest to Strongest)
One ofX-Men's most complex characters, Mystique is a centuries-old shapeshifter who will betray anyone in the name of the greater good... or just getting what she wants. Mystique has been a longtime enemy of the X-Men - and sometime ally to select heroes - since 1978. However, with a backstory stretching back to the 1900s, she's been around a lot longer, giving her the time to accrue a surprising amount of connections to other Marvel heroes.
Here are the 10 most powerful Marvel characters who are related to Mystique. We're ranking Mystique's various relatives by power level, and ignoring alt-universe relatives unless they've really made their mark on Marvel's mainstream reality.
10 Bad Seed, aka Graydon Creed
Mystique's Biological Son with Sabretooth
Graydon Creed is the son of Mystique and the supervillain Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth. This was no love match, but rather the result of Mystique sleeping with Sabretooth while disguised as a German spy named Leni Zauber. Mystique faked her death to make sure Sabretooth couldn't track her down, and raised Graydon until his early adolescence, when it became apparent that - despite having two powerful mutant parents - he was a normal human who wouldn't develop any powers.
Creed came to despise mutants, and became a major threat to the X-Men in his adult life, even founding the anti-mutant group known as the Friends of Humanity. Considered one of the biggest killers of mutants in Marvel lore, Graydon has since enhanced his body with cyborg implants. He was last seen in the 'Sabretooth War' arc, where it was revealed he had been traveling the multiverse hunting alternate versions of his father and taking their heads as trophies. Sadly, this experience couldn't save him from being slaughtered by the real deal.
9 Nightcrawler, aka Kurt Wagner
Mystique's Biological Son with Destiny
For a long time, Marvel fans believed that Nightcrawler was the son of Mystique and the demonic Azazel, however recent comics have retconned the X-Men hero's backstory. In X-Men Blue: Origins (Si Spurrier, Marcus To and Wilton Santos), Mystique revealed that Kurt is actually was actually conceived with her lover Destiny. Destiny has the ability to see the future, and figured out that Azazel having a son (or believing he did) was crucial to stopping him from taking over the planet. Destiny set up events so that Nightcrawler was adopted by the powerful sorcerer Margali Szardos, and eventually joined the X-Men.
Mystique and Destiny were heartbroken by giving up their son to save the world, and convinced Charles Xavier to remove key memories, suppressing their love for their son. These memories have since been restored, allowing Nightcrawler to engage in a halting and incomplete reunion with his mothers.
A skilled acrobat, Nightcrawler is one of Marvel's most talented teleporters. He's also able to climb steep surfaces thanks to suction discs on his fingertips, and is almost impossible to see in darkness thanks to his mother's blue skin. Having trained with the X-Men, Nightcrawler has mastered his powers, while his history working in the circus has trained his reflexes and agility to peak level.
8 Raze Darkhölme
Mystique's Alt-Reality Son with Wolverine
Raze Darkhölme is the future (now likely alternate-reality) son of Mystique and Wolverine, possessing both of their powers. In fact, Raze is noted to be an even more skilled shapeshifter than his mother, taking essentially any shape. Raze debuted in the X-Men: Battle of the Atom crossover, running a mind-controlled group of 'X-Men' with his half-brother, Charles Xavier II. Raze traveled back in time to fight the X-Men of Marvel's mainstream reality multiple times, and at one point claimed that he has already been born in Marvel's main reality. In his original timeline, Raze killed his mother and has a strong hatred of psychics.
7 Nocturne, aka Talia Wagner
Mystique's Alt-Reality Granddaughter
Nocturne is the alternate-reality daughter of Nightcrawler and Scarlet Witch, and therefore Mystique's biological granddaughter. While Mystique has a lot of alt-reality grandchildren, Nocturne (aka Talia Wagner) is notable for spending a significant amount of time in Marvel's mainstream universe, as well as working with the Exiles - a group of mutants who travel from reality to reality, changing key events to repair damage done to the multiverse.
Talia has her father's reflexes and physical mutations, but not his teleportation. Instead, Talia can phase into and possess other people for a maximum of twelve hours in one lunar cycle (hence her codename), as well as the power to fire 'Hex Bolts' that draw power from the Brimstone Dimension - the same dimension through which Nightcrawler teleports. Marvel's mainstream Kurt has spent time getting to know Nocturne, and she's been one of the most consistent members of the many versions of the Exiles.
6 Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson
Mystique's Ex-Husband
Yes, Mystique was once married to Deadpool. In Deadpool #27, Wade travels around the Marvel Universe to ensure all his prior marriages have legally ended, preparing to marry the monster queen Shiklah. Among the many women Deadpool contacts asking for a divorce is Mystique, who married Wade while in disguise as 'Lurleen' in order to infiltrate Weapon X. Their marriage is revealed in 'So Deadpool Walks Into a Bar...' from Frank Tieri and Dexter Soy.
5 Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau
Mystique's Son-in-Law (Whether She Likes It or Not)
Ever since Rogue and Gambit tied the knot in Marc Guggenheim and David Marquez's X-Men: Gold #30, Remy has been Mystique's son-in-law. Both are antiheroes with shady pasts, and Gambit has been willing to help Mystique when she calls on Rogue for help. One person who isn't happy about this arrangement is Mystique's wife Destiny, who hates Gambit - both as an individual and as Rogue's choice of husband.
Gambit has the mutant ability to convert mass into kinetic energy, but rarely ever uses his full potential. On X-Men missions, he often charges up cards with explosive energy, but various stories have shown that if he ever digs deep, he'll be able to control kinetic energy on a worldwide level. Thankfully, he's happy being a sometime hero and one of the world's best thieves.
4 Charles Xavier II
Mystique's Alt-Reality Son with Charles Xavier
Mystique's alternate-reality son with Charles Xavier, Xavier II is the older brother of Raze Darkhölme, and worked with him to form their own X-Men roster, including brainwashed versions of Beast, Molly Hayes, Deadpool and Jean Grey. Xavier II was adopted shortly after his birth, tragically killing his adoptive mother when his psychic gifts emerged. He later tracked down Mystique only to find she had been killed by Raze, leading to an alliance between the two half-brothers, and their eventual attack on the present-day X-Men of Marvel's main reality.
Charles Xavier II is one of the planet's most powerful telepaths, to the extent that he could actively control an entire team of X-Men at the same time. He also has telekinetic abilities, as well as extensive knowledge of futuristic technology.
3 Rogue, aka Anna Marie
Mystique and Destiny's Adopted Daughter
The mutant hero known as Rogue ran away from home as a child following the disappearance of her mother. She was eventually taken in by Mystique and Destiny, who raised her as their daughter, with Mystique training Rogue to join her in acts of mutant terrorism. Rogue fought both the Avengers and X-Men as a villain, before eventually being taken in by Charles Xavier, who promised to help her learn to control her powers. Rogue joined the X-Men and has had a rocky relationship with Mystique ever since, including her adopted mother trying to kill her at one point.
Rogue has the ability to steal the powers and memories of anyone with who she comes into physical contact, and has permanently absorbed powers from both Captain Marvel and Wonder Man. Most recently, she also absorbed the powers from mutant precognitive Harvey X, giving her a limited ability to predict the future and sense danger. One of Marvel's strongest and fastest heroes, Rogue has recently renewed her relationship with her brother Nightcrawler, as well as being willing to work alongside her mothers.
2 Professor X, aka Charles Xavier
Mystique's Movie-Canon Adoptive Brother
While Mystique loathes Xavier in Marvel's comics - seeing him as the man who stole two of her children - 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies turned the pair into adoptive brother and sister, with Xavier offering the young Mystique a home before eventually becoming rivals in adulthood. This retcon was introduced in X-Men: First Class, where Xavier is played by James McAvoy and Mystique by Jennifer Lawrence. The two were both enemies and allies over the years, with Mystique eventually joining Xavier's X-Men roster.
1 Destiny, aka Irene Adler
Mystique's Longtime Lover and Eventual Wife
Mystique's beloved wife Destiny is one of the most powerful mutants alive, able to see all potential futures and the events that will lead to them. Destiny uses this power to manipulate events towards the best possible future, explaining many of Mystique's schemes and double-crosses over the years. Within Marvel lore, the pair's relationship inspired the Sherlock Holmes stories, with Mystique working as a male detective in the 1900s while allied with Destiny, whose real name is Irene Adler.
Destiny has spent a lot of Marvel continuity dead, but was finally resurrected during the Krakoan Era, when Mystique risked the entire mutant nation to ensure her wife was returned to life (in 2021's Inferno from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti.) While Mystique and Destiny were queer-coded for decades, they officially married in 2024's X-Men: The Wedding Special, from a range of creators.
Those are the 10 most powerful X-Men characters who are related to Mystique, from her body-snatching alt-universe granddaughter to her timeline warping wife.
