10 Of Voight's Scariest Moments In Chicago PD

Hank Voight has easily been one of the most polarizing characters in Chicago P.D. all through his time in the series. For the past decade, Voight has been recognized for his tough demeanor as the Intelligence leader and aggressive interrogation tactics toward suspects. He is a police Sergeant who always puts his unit and those in peril above himself. Voight takes drastic measures and goes beyond the law to take down murderers and criminals in Chicago.

Throughout his tenure on the show, Voight has experienced several scary moments, including losing individuals close to him and those he tried to keep out of trouble. The sergeant himself is creepy due to his intimidating presence and raspy voice when pulling information from villainous culprits. Since Voight plays his job close to the chest, he's been in many life-and-death situations, including a close call in the Chicago P.D. season 11 finale. As such, Voight's scariest moments define his fearlessness and toughness as a Chicago police officer.

10 Voight Beat A Suspect To Find Dawson’s Son

Chicago P.D. Season 1, Episode 2, Stepping Stone; Wrong Side of the Bars Part 2

Chicago-PD-Antonio-and-Voight-Interrogate-Suspect

Right off the bat, during the first couple of episodes in season 1, Voight and his unit work a perilous case as they battle a Colombian drug gang. Antonio Dawson’s partner, Detective Julia Willhite, is shot and killed in the pilot episode, and by the end of it, Antonio learns that the gang kidnapped his son. Voight helps Antonio find answers to the whereabouts of his child by beating up a suspect.

This moment is pivotal in introducing Voight’s intense methods of interrogation, which have become a nightmare for criminals and killers who cross Voight and his unit. Voight’s beatdown of a Colombian drug member proves his devotion to Antonio and the team, especially when the life of an officer’s child is in jeopardy. It also shows Voight’s persistence in seeking justice for the city by any means necessary.

9 Voight Breaks A Man’s Fingers After His Home Robbery

Chicago P.D. Season 2, Episode 5, An Honest Woman

Chicago-PD-Voight-Burglarized-At-Home

It’s rare to see Voight placed in danger in his own home. However, this is one of the few instances in which the sergeant and Olive (the pregnant girlfriend of Voight’s son, Justin) are attacked by house burglars who steal money from Voight’s safe. To get payback, the Sergeant goes after those responsible for the burglary. This includes Carl, who Al Olinsky overpowers, while Voight threatens to break his fingers with pliers if he doesn’t answer who ordered the robbery.

Despite getting answers from Carl, Voight still breaks a few fingers to make the point that no one has the right to mess with him and his family at home or there will be consequences.

8 Voight Kills A Thug To Protect Justin

Chicago P.D. Season 1, Episode 7, The Price We Pay

Chicago-PD-Antonio-and-Voight-arguing

Throughout the early years of Chicago P.D., Voight has always been devoted to protecting his son Justin. However, he has been in trouble with the law on several occasions. One of them involves the murder of a crime boss. A drug dealer named Joseph Catalano has proof of Justin’s involvement with the crime boss’ murder. Voight kills Joseph, so Justin isn’t in danger and is sent to the army to get away from Chicago for good.

This also shows Voight's ruthlessness in taking on any high-level criminal to protect the people he cares for.

This case establishes Voight’s love for Justin and his willingness to get him out of harm’s way, even if it means killing a thug connected to a crime boss. However, this also shows Voight’s ruthlessness in taking on any high-level criminal to protect the people he cares for. What makes Joseph’s demise intriguing is that it isn’t shown on camera, but his body is found washed ashore in the Chicago River. Given Justin’s situation in Chicago P.D., Voight’s involvement in Joseph’s murder is predictable.

7 Voight Killing Kevin Bingham, Justin’s Murderer

Chicago P.D. Season 3, Episode 23, Start Digging

Chicago-PD-Voight-and-Kevin

No matter how much Voight tried to protect his son, Justin ultimately met his demise, leaving the sergeant emotionally distraught. As a father, Hank feels that he failed to keep his son away from the dangers of Chicago. Although Voight gets his revenge and kills Justin’s murderer, Kevin Bingham, this case haunts Voight years later when he loses young victims, including Noah in season 11.

This episode reveals a broken Voight who is completely devastated after losing his child. Voight hands Justin’s killer one of the most horrifying punishments by forcing Kevin to dig his own grave before the Sergeant fatally shoots him. Even Erin Lindsay is emotionally devastated by Voight’s actions, believing that he’s throwing his life away by killing Kevin. Justin’s murder also proves that Voight isn’t afraid to kill for vengeance, even scaring Kevin, who didn't expect to meet his demise at the hands of a police officer.

6 Voight Interrogates The Murderer Of Olinsky’s Daughter

Chicago P.D. Season 4, Episode 16, Emotional Proximity

Chicago-PD-Voight-in-Emotional-Proximity

Voight isn't the only one whose child is murdered by a ruthless killer. Olinsky's daughter, Lexi, dies due to a warehouse fire set by arsonist and murderer Dylan Oates. Voight interrogates Oates to get a confession out of him and to figure out why he targeted a warehouse party to set on fire. Hank attempts to scare Oates by asking him who broke his heart to make him commit such a heinous crime. However, the killer doesn't budge, even after the sergeant slaps Oates and pulls a knife at his neck.

Oates is one of the few remorseless killers who isn't phased by Voight's scary tactics. This places the Sergeant in a tough spot because when Olinsky asks to be alone with his daughter's killer, Hank refuses to give him the keys to the cage. Olinsky pushes his argument further by reminding Voight of what he did to get vengeance for Justin. Voight understands Olinsky's intention to avenge his daughter, but he's also thinking about the families of the other victims of the warehouse fire who want the murderer to pay for his crimes.

5 Voight And Olinsky Throw Gangster Into Lake

Chicago P.D. Season 1, Episode 14, The Docks

Chicago-PD-Halstead-and-Voight-in-The-Docks

After Antonio is shot and nearly killed by drug lord Adres Diaz aka Pulpo, Voight and his unit track him down. When Pulpo is found, Voight and Olinsky intend to kill the criminal by placing chains around his neck connected to cement blocks and dropping him into a lake. However, Diaz's demise is cut short thanks to Jay Halstead in Chicago P.D., who disagrees with this plan and convinces Olinsky to side with him and place Pulpo in custody.

Voight and Olinsky's plan to kill Pulpo is reminiscent of a violent vigilante like Dexter Morgan or gangsters in crime dramas, making the detectives appear like villainous killers themselves. This episode also reveals Halstead's disapproval of Voight's extreme methods of violence and torture towards criminals, since Jay is more of a by-the-book officer who intends to follow the rules.

4 Voight Threatens To Place Suspect In General Population

Chicago P.D. Season 5, Episode 5, Home

Chicago-PD-Voight-and-his-unit-in-Home

Aside from violent torture, Voight is an expert at horrifying criminals with his words. For instance, when Hank interrogates Clyde Dupree, a man who runs a child sex trafficking ring, he threatens him by mentioning how his ability to live will be in agony. This includes placing Clyde in the general population as opposed to the special population. This means that Clyde will be stuck with dangerous murderers and convicts who tend to dislike men like him and will make his life miserable.

This scene shows how Voight can be threatening and intimidating towards suspects to get confessions out of them.

This scene shows how Voight can be threatening and intimidating towards suspects to get confessions out of them. The sergeant uses his words, as well as going behind Clyde, subtly touching his shoulders, and whispering something in his ear that completely frightens him into confessing his crime. Voight understands how to take his time with a suspect to get what he wants.

3 Voight Beats Suspect With A Pipe

Chicago P.D. Season 3, Episode 3, Actual Physical Violence

Chicago-PD-Voight-and-Erin

When torturing a suspect, Voight not only uses violence, but he also gives them a taste of their own medicine. For example, during his interrogation of rapist and kidnapper Trevor Dunne in the cage, Hank takes out a crowbar that Trevor used to torture women to instill fear in him. In this case, it worked, making Trevor sweat, scream, and fear for his life.

The beginning of this interrogation is also eerie because Trevor initially thinks that Voight is a medic when he's putting on black gloves. However, when he looks at Hank and sees him take out the crowbar from a bag, he realizes that he's in for a reckoning. Voight also taunts the rapist by telling him he's used to actual physical violence(hence the name of the episode) and uses his weapon against him to retrieve information on Steve Ulrich (the leader of a human trafficking ring).

2 Voight Nearly Chokes Serial Killer Gregory Yates

Chicago P.D. Season 2, Episode 20, The Number of Rats

Chicago-PD-and-SVU-crew

Gregory Yates is one of the most intimidating and scariest antagonists in Chicago P.D. He is a serial killer who is obsessed with Erin and is responsible for the shocking murder of Nadia Decotis (one of Erin's closest friends). Nadia's death emotionally devastated Erin and the entire department, including Hank, who nearly choked Yates to death after the killer was convicted of all his murder charges and sentenced to life in prison.

Voight's public outburst towards Yates underlines his frustration towards the killer because he murdered a pivotal member of their department and several other women. Yates is the one who instills fear in women, but when Voight tells the killer he's going to get what he deserves as he's sent to jail, the fear is now in Yates as he's put away for life (until his demise at the hands of Lindsay later on).

1 Voight Hurts Remorseless Killer’s Injured Shoulder For His Confession For That

Chicago P.D. Season 4, Episode 12, Sanctuary

Chicago-PD-Voight-in-front-of-church

When Voight and Halstead interrogate Russell Tillman and accuse him of murder and rape, the killer places the blame on two black boys. This infuriates Voight, causing him to twist and injure Tillman's shoulder before confessing to his crimes. Halstead assists Voight during this good cop, bad cop interrogation, for Tillman to fully explain himself and why he committed such heinous acts of violence.

Voight expresses a controlled and upsetting demeanor in this scene, referring to how he's been a cop for years and his dissatisfaction towards suspects like Tillman for pinning crimes on black children, underlining the racial discrimination Voight has witnessed in his years as a police officer. Taking down murderers and criminals with his aggressive style of justice is why Voight is the leader of the team in Chicago P.D.
