10 Strongest Rock-Type Pokémon in Pokémon GO
Among the various Pokémon in Pokémon GO, Rock-types are some of the strongest, with excellent defense and offense in equal measure against certain types. While Rock-type Pokémon have many weaknesses, they can easily play into their strengths to dominate battles. When facing an opponent who can't exploit their vulnerabilities, Rock-types are almost unstoppable forces in your team.
Rock-types are often mistaken for Ground-types in Pokémon GO, who also have good offensive power. However, Rock-types have greater bulk with more resistance to various types of attacks present in other Pokémon. While this doesn't make one type "better" than the other, it creates a good distinction that will help you realize the advantages Rock-types have over other, similar elements.
10 Tyrantrum
Powerful Offense With Risky Weaknesses
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2537 CP | 227 ATK | 191 DEF | 193 HP | Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Ground, Ice, Steel | 15.37 | 270.69 |
Tyrantrum is a powerful Rock/Dragon-type Pokémon that boasts very high attacking power, even among its peers. With above-average HP and Defense, this Pokémon can stand its ground against other strong opponents, dishing out large damage numbers with high Damage Per Second (DPS) and Total Damage Output (TDO). Moves like Dragon Tail and Meteor Beam help it follow its best offensive strategies.
Any Rock-type Pokémon that uses a Rock-type move in battle does extra damage using that attack. This is due to a hidden feature called Same Type Attack Bonus (S.T.A.B.) that encourages Pokémon to use moves of their native typing.
Unfortunately, Tyrantrum suffers from the most common weakness of the Rock-type - a variety of bad match-ups. While Tyrantrum does have a variety of good resistances against other types, it also has many vulnerabilities to common Pokémon types. As such, Tyrantrum is easy to counter, but it can still be a solid choice for your team against Pokémon who do not deal super-effective damage to it.
9 Shadow Aggron
Incredible Defenses And Resistances
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
3391 CP | 198 ATK | 257 DEF | 172 HP | Fighting, Ground, Water | 14.82 | 258.14 |
One of the most defensive Rock-types in the game is Aggron, who becomes even stronger when you use its Shadow variant. Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon GO boast higher stats than their normal counterparts, with Shadow Aggron claiming higher Defense this way. The Steel/Rock typing of Aggron gives them resistance against over half the types in the game, making it hard for most Pokémon to counter it.

Pokémon GO: Mega Aggron Raid Guide (Best Counters & Weaknesses)
Mega Aggron is a new Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO that Trainers can encounter during the "Test Your Mettle" Event in September of 2022.
While Aggron doesn't have as high Attack or Stamina as Tyrantrum, it has far fewer weaknesses. Moves like Iron Tail combine with Meteor Beam to inflict more than enough damage to eliminate rival Pokémon in Raids or trainer battles. The main weakness of Aggron is Fighting or Ground-type moves, which deal +156.0% damage to it, hard countering it under some circumstances.
8 Terrakion
Fighting Power With A Rocky Exterior
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4181 CP | 260 ATK | 192 DEF | 209 HP | Fighting, Ground, Water, Fairy, Grass, Psychic, Steel | 18.73 | 356.91 |
Terrakion is a Legendary Rock/Fighting-type Pokémon whose Attack stat alone makes them one of the strongest in their type. As a Legendary, Terrakion has very high DPS and TDO, inflicting far more damage than most Rock-types you'll collect throughout Pokémon GO. With above-average Stamina, Terrakion also doesn't go down easy.
While an excellent Rock-type, Terrakion almost works better as a Fighting-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO, using Rock as a secondary typing for more defense as it eliminates strong Normal or Ice-types on a rival team.
The Fighting-type of Terrakion also allows it to target more weaknesses of enemy Pokémon, using moves like Sacred Sword to tear through an opponent's HP. While it can learn moes like Zen Headbutt and Earthquake to cover bad match-ups, Terrakion has many vulnerabilities, making it only effective in battles it knows it will win.
7 Shadow Gigalith
Greater Bulk Combined With High Potential
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
3650 CP | 226 ATK | 201 DEF | 198 HP | Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Steel | 16.67 | 262.58 |
While Terrakion works better as a Fighting-type attacker, Shadow Gigalith fulfills a role solely designed for a Rock-type striker. This Pokémon has very high DPS with moves like Smack Down and Meteor Beam, but it has surprising versatility in its move list. Attacks like Solar Beam can help counter Water-types who typically target Rock-types like Gigalith, while the move Superpower can overcome Steel-type threats.
Gigalith has incredible bulk even among other Rock-types, making it hard to defeat in battle. This Pokémon has strong Defense, Attack, and Stamina statsin equal measure, giving you a flexible team member who can fulfill a variety of roles. It also helps that Gigalith can counter some meta picks in PvP, including Metagross, Dusk Mane Necrozma, or Dialga in Pokémon GO.
6 Shadow Rampardos
Potent Offense With Some Tricks Up Its Sleeve
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
3728 CP | 295 ATK | 109 DEF | 219 HP | Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Steel | 18.83 | 187.04 |
At first glance, you may look at Shadow Rampardos and dismiss it due to a low Defense and TDO set of stats. However, those who invest in this pure Rock-type Pokémon will discover one of Pokémon GO's best attackers, with ridiculously high DPS that can inflict punishment on even the strongest foes. Smack Down and Rock Slide attacks give Rampardos big damage numbers, especially when inflicting super-effective strikes.
Shadow Rampardos has some of the highest Stamina among Rock-types, but this stat is not easy to notice due to a low Defense. Make sure to use this Pokémon in situations where it is not be countered to make the most of its best stats.
However, what makes Rampardos unique is the diversity in the moves it can learn. While its best attacking power comes from Rock-type synergy, it can have one of its moves changed to especially counter any Pokémon trying to take advantage of its weaknesses. For example, Rampardos can learn Flamethrower to counter Grass-types, or Zen Headbutt to counter Fighting-types.
5 Shadow Tyranitar
Brutality To Counter Most Enemies
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4335 CP | 251 ATK | 207 DEF | 225 HP | Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass, Ground, Steel, Water | 19.71 | 359.51 |
Shadow Tyranitar is a Dark/Rock-type who boasts fairly balanced stats, with an emphasis on strong defense without sacrificing offensive power. As a pesudo-Legendary, Tyranitar has extraordinary strength that allows it to counter many meta picks in Pokémon GO's Master Leagues or other PvP modes. Smack Down, Bite, Brutal Swing, and Stone Edge all play into Tyranitar's S.T.A.B. to deal crazy damage to enemy Pokémon.
Tyranitar is especially powerful against Flying, Ghost, and Psychic-types, as the damage bonus from its moves will always deal super-effective damage to those types of Pokémon.
The ridiculous height of Tyranitar's DPS and TDO make them useful even when attacking without dealing super-effective damage. Tyranitar is a great all-rounder choice to fill in for a role on your team to create a greater balance of typings. Even though Tyranitar can counter many Pokémon in the game, the only thing holding it back is a variety of debilitating weaknesses, especially against Fighting-types.
4 Mega Aerodactyl
Straightforward And Reliable Attacking Strength
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4655 CP | 292 ATK | 210 DEF | 190 HP | Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel, Water | 16.99 | 322.07 |
As the only one of its kind, Mega Aerodactyl's unique Rock/Flying dual typing gives it an extra advantage against a variety of Pokémon who would normally counter Rock-types. While it does gain new weaknesses against Electric and Rock, ironically, Mega Aerodactyl has powerful and straightforward attacks that play to its strengths well.

Pokémon GO Promo Codes & How To Redeem Them (April 2025)
If you're looking for some free rewards in Pokémon GO, make sure you check out the latest promo codes for December 2024 to see what you can claim.
Rock Throw and Rock Slide do exactly what you would think - take advantage of Mega Aerodactyl's extremely high Attack stat to bury enemies underneath falling stone. Ancient Power, Earth Power, and Hyper Beam round out Mega Aerodactyl's move set, which can be used often since the Pokémon's high Defense will allow it to last long in fights. With quick speeds thanks to its Flying-type, Mega Aerodactyl can perform consistently in high-stakes battles.
3 Mega Diancie
Rare Type Combination Helps Overcome Challenges
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4913 CP | 342 ATK | 235 DEF | 137 HP | Steel, Grass, Water, Ground | 19.12 | 298.61 |
Another rare type combination comes from Mega Diancie, whose Rock/Fairy-type constitution limits their bad match-ups. Mega Diancie has some of the highest attacking power among all Rock-types, along with an absurd Defense stat to keep it protected. Although it doesn't have much HP, it can deliver huge blows to a rival team's ace Pokémon with its incredible DPS score.
The Fairy-type Moonblast Rock-type Rock Throw attacks make up Mega Diancie's best moveset, giving it ways to counter even the notoriously strong Dragon-types in Pokémon GO. Mega Diancie also has a large potential Max CP, making it a Pokémon with very high potential. Those who power up this Rock-type Pokémon will be rewarded with one of the strongest attackers in the game within both of its type categories.
2 Shadow Rhyperior
Expert Survival Skills With Astonishing Attacks
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4221 CP | 241 ATK | 190 DEF | 251 HP | Steel, Grass, Water, Ground, Fighting, Ice | 19.19 | 358.29 |
Shadow Rhyperior is the strongest non-Mega Rock-type mainly due to its high HP. Among Rock-types, Rhyperior has the highest health value to survive enemy attacks, even super-effective ones that can wipe out other Pokémon, like Mega Aerodactyl or Rampardos.
By using an Elite Charge TM, you can teach Shadow Rhyperior a signature move called Rock Wrecker. This attack is the strongest Rock-type move in the game, giving Rhyperior almost unmatched power to tear through a rival Pokémon's HP.
This Pokémon is also a Rock/Ground-type, giving it a few more weaknesses but far better moves to pick from. Earthquake now gains a S.T.A.B. bonus when Rhyperior uses it, making it perfect to pair alongside Smack Down to cover a variety of match-ups. Rhyperior has a large enough DPS, TDO, and Attack to wipe out most Pokémon, even if it is going against some foes who would normally counter it.
1 Mega Tyranitar
Pinnacle Of Stone
Max CP | Attack | Defense | Stamina | Weaknesses | DPS | TDO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
6045 CP | 309 ATK | 276 DEF | 225 HP | Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass, Ground, Steel, Water | 19.83 | 569.11 |
There is no other Rock-type stronger than Mega Tyranitar in Pokémon GO, and it isn't even close. This is my go-to Pokémon for a variety of battles, mainly due to the absolutely incredible TDO this form of Tyranitar is capable of producing. Even in bad match-ups, Mega Tyranitar can overcome its weakness by simply out damaging other Pokémon before they can K.O. it throughout the course of a fight.

All Ditto Disguises In Pokémon GO (February 2025)
Here is the latest list of current Ditto disguises so Pokémon GO trainers can find and catch the purple blog to add it to their collection.
All the best traits of Rock-types are present in Mega Tyranitar, from extraordinary bulk to over-the-top attacking power. Mega Tyranitar can tank most attacks, even super-effective ones from Pokémon too weak to take it out in one hit. As a Pokemon without an equal in its category, Mega Tyranitar easily takes the top spot as the strongest Rock-type Pokémon you can get in Pokémon GO's expansive roster.
