20 Years Later, Darth Nihilus Still Has the Scariest Sith Mask in Star Wars History

In Star Wars, there are very few Sith Lords more terrifying than Darth Nihilus. Nihilus is an energy vampire burdened with an insatiable addiction to the dark side of the Force. The Sith Lord’s simple yet harrowing visage likens Nihilus to the Grim Reaper. However, the dark side Force addict has earned his mythical status and bleak Darth title. Darth Nihilus represents the inevitable end of all life.

In Star Wars: Tales #24, “Unseen, Unheard” - by Chris Avellone, Dustin Weaver, & Michael Heisler - readers are introduced to a Force-sensitive woman who narrates the final moments of her homeworld.

Darth Nihilus stands over his victim.
Darth Nihilus stands over his victim.

She and her people are all blind but rely on the Force to see and interact with the world around them. Through the Force, they see more than they ever could with eyesight. Yet, despite their senses, no one felt the arrival of Darth Nihilus’s ravenous maw. No one saw the reaper’s face, but when he spoke from aboard his lifeless ship, all life ceased in an instant.

Darth Nihilus Is a Specter Who Feeds On Souls

Darth Nihilus is an exceptionally creepy character. In his quest for power, Nihilus began to consume the vestiges of the Force that flows through all living things. Having abandoned his physical form, Nihilus instead exists as a disembodied spirit, bound to his mask and armor through the sheer intensity of his hunger. His mask may be simple, but its reaper iconography is relevant to the Dark Lord’s presence. Darth Nihilus’s sole purpose in life was to consume power through the dark side. To his victims, he is the embodiment of Death, hauntingly having come to gorge on their souls.

Thus, Nihilus became more akin to a force of entropy. Any who gaze upon the Sith Lord's mask will soon perish. His voice is the last to be heard before their souls are consumed. For many, as his name suggests, Darth Nihilus is an inevitable force of nature that cannot be stopped. His mask is the face of death, even to those who are unable to see it. In his shapeless shrouded form, Nihilus is stripped of his humanity, leaving the visage of Death as his only identity.

The Sith Lord Completely Lacks Humanity

Even Darth Vader Isn’t Completely Inhuman

It’s his overall lack of humanity that truly sets Darth Nihilus apart from other Sith Lords. Despite most Sith Lords' irredeemability, many can still be seen as living beings. Darth Vader may look like a mountainous android, but an android in the shape of a man. Darth Bane and Darth Revan both hide their faces, but still act as living people. But Darth Nihilus presents himself as an inhuman being. He flies crew-less scraps of abandoned flotillas, leaving only his stark-white mask to be seen in the blackened void of space.

Nihilus may not have as complex or dynamic a mask as other Sith Lords, but the simplicity of its design compliments the character’s lack of human identity.

Nihilus is a dark specter whose sole purpose is to consume. He has long cast away his humanity to become a being of pure consumption. To lesser powers, his mask is the face of Death. To other Sith Lords, his ceaseless hunger threatened to consume their power. Nihilus may not have as complex or dynamic a mask as other Sith Lords, but thesimplicity of its design compliments the character’s lack of human identity. To gaze upon any of Star Wars’s Sith Lords means certain death, but only Darth Nihilus’s grim inspires the hopeless dread of an inevitable spiritual death.
