Lucknow: A tragic accident claimed the lives of five postgraduate doctors from Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai and left one more injured after their speeding car collided with a divider, overturned and then crashed into a truck on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Kannauj.

According to the police, a Scorpio SUV travelling from Lucknow to Agra lost control, went off course, and broke through the road divider, entering the opposite lane. The vehicle then collided in front of a truck coming from the opposite direction. Tragically, five people in the Scorpio died on the spot and one person who survived the accident is currently undergoing treatment.

As per the TOI news report, the deceased doctors have been identified as Dr Aniruddh Verma, Dr Santosh Kumar Maurya, Dr Jaiveer Singh, Dr Arun Kumar, and Dr Nardev. All of them died on the spot.

The incident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday around 3:30 am when six people including doctors and a lab technician were returning from a colleague's wedding in a SUV car. The police reported that the driver of the SUV fell asleep which caused the devastating accident.

Speaking to TOI, Superintendent of Police Kannauj, Amit Kumar Anand said, "The vehicle, carrying six people, was en route to Agra from Lucknow. The Tirwa police transported all six occupants of the car to Government Medical College Tirwa, where hospital staff declared five occupants deceased. One individual is currently undergoing treatment at the facility."

When the police received information about the accident, they reached the spot and transferred the deceased to the mortuary. They have registered a case and an investigation is underway.

Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to assess the situation at the crash site. The sudden death of the doctors deeply shocked both family and colleagues at the university.
