"A Fresh New Lens": Magic: The Gathering Is Ready to Explore Its Multiverse In a New Light
The lore of Magic: The Gathering is about to expand even further following the announcement of a partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Dark Horse Comics, one that will see an all-new Magic: The Gathering comic book series hit the shelves in the summer of 2025. The many universes that exist within the vast multiverse of Magic: The Gathering will be explored by all-new protagonist (and antagonist) Planeswalkers in ways fans have never seen before, and the possibilities are literally limitless.
In a press release from Dark Horse Comics, it’s revealed that the publisher is partnering with Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast to release all-new Magic: The Gathering comic book series, graphic novels, art books, “and more”. Right now, very little specific information has been released about what exactly Magic: The Gathering fans can expect, but the excitement from the editors at Dark Horse Comics and the creative minds at Wizards of the Coast is a great indication of what’s to come.
Senior editor at Dark Horse Comics, Spencer Cushing, admits that they’re in total disbelief at the opportunity to work with Wizards of the Coast on this upcoming project, as they have admitted that they’ve been an avid fan since childhood.
Spencer Cushing: “The opportunity to work with Wizards of the Coast is a dream come true.”
Similarly, the creative minds at Wizards of the Coast are just as excited about this partnership, including Jackie Jones, Vice President of Creative, Magic: The Gathering.
Jackie Jones: “We’re so excited to be teaming up with the incredible creatives at Dark Horse to invite fans and newcomers alike into the iconic fantasy world that has defined Magic: The Gathering for the past 30 years, told through a fresh new lens.”
Jones also touched on what fans can expect from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering comics.
Jackie Jones: “Each series will feature epic, high-stakes stories across Magic’s visually stunning, diverse multiverse, told through the eyes of our most iconic, complex, and compelling heroes and anti-heroes - giving readers the opportunity to experience what makes Magic so unique and awesome.”
New Magic: The Gathering series from Dark Horse Comics and Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast will be available in the summer of 2025.
Magic: The Gathering Isn’t the Only Wizards of the Coast Property Getting the Dark Horse Treatment
Dungeons & Dragons Will Also Be Getting New Comics from Dark Horse Comics
While the fact that new Magic: The Gathering stories are going to be told through “a fresh lens” at Dark Horse Comics is exciting, the excitement doesn’t stop there. Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast will also be bringing fans all-newDungeons & Dragons comic series, graphic novels, art books, and “much more”. Like Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons has been massively popular for decades, and stands as the most popular roleplaying game in history. Throughout the roleplaying game’s 50-year history, practically countless stories have been crafted within its expansive sandbox.
Now, even more Dungeons & Dragons stories will be brought to old and new fans alike, diving into what is possible in this utterly epic fantasy universe. And the best part? The people behind these new series fully understand what fans expect of them. They’re not going to slap the Dungeons & Dragons logo on some basic fantasy comic that bears no significant resemblance to the game. They’re going to use elements from the game to create amazing stories, as if the stories themselves are party-crafted campaigns. In other words, the authenticity is there, and fans should be very excited.
This Isn’t the First Time Dark Horse Has Brought Magic: The Gathering to the Page
Dark Horse Comics First Collaborated with Wizards of the Coast in the Late ‘90s
The idea that new Magic: The Gathering comics are coming from Dark Horse Comics in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast is incredibly exciting. However, this isn’t the first time such a collaboration has happened. Dark Horse Comics first collaborated with Wizards of the Coast in the late ‘90s to produce the four-part miniseries: Magic: The Gathering - Gerrard’s Quest. That series followed Gerrard Capashen, who had been given a Legacy of tremendous power, and was called upon to use that power to save his friend from the forces of Volrath, who is the lord of the plane of Rath.
Magic: The Gathering - Gerrard’s Quest brought the epic scale and high-stakes adventure of Magic: The Gathering to life in a fantastic way. And now, both Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast are even more dedicated to crafting captivating stories within Magic: The Gathering’s multiverse. Gerrard’s Quest was just that: one quest. But, with these new comics releasing in the summer of 2025, there’s no telling what fans will be in for, and how extensive these new storylines will be.
All-in-all, it’s easy to see how awesome this new collaboration between Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast will be. Not only can fans look at the history between the two collaborators as evidence of the quality that can be produced, but they can also rest assured that the people behind bringing these stories to life are more dedicated and excited than ever before to give old and new fans alike the best of the best, and truly explore the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering through “a fresh lens”.
