A New Fallout RPG Is Coming, But It's Not What You Expect
A new Fallout RPG is coming out in 2026, offering solo players a unique tabletop experience while exploring the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The Fallout franchise is experiencing an unexpected surge in popularity thanks to the Fallout TV series, which explores the origins of the infamous Vault-Tec while also showcasing a unique post-apocalyptic world. Although Fallout 5 is not expected for several more years at minimum, a new solo Fallout RPG might scratch the itch of fans looking to dig deeper into that world, although they'll need to be ready for some solo TTRPG play to do so.
This week, Modiphius announced Lone Wanderer, a new Fallout tabletop RPG meant for solo play. The game will procedurally generate a story for solo players without a new GM, allowing them to explore the wasteland after they emerge from a Vault-Tec vault. Players will also be able to play as other kinds of Fallout characters, including survivors, ghouls, super mutants, and robots. The game will use Modiphius's 2D20 system and will be released in 2026.
What You Need To Know About The Fallout TTRPG
Fallout RPG Uses A 2D20 System And Captures Many Of Fallout's Systems
Outside the video games, Modiphius's Fallout Roleplaying Game is one of the best ways to experience the Fallout franchise. Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, which uses a D20 system that involves trying to roll equal to or higher than a certain number, the Fallout TTRPG uses a 2D20 system in which players roll two twenty-sided dice to get below a certain number. The game also brings over many other systems from the Fallout games, intending to make it as familiar a feeling to video games as possible.
Modiphius also has plans to expand its Fallout RPG line, with more books that delve further into the history and geography of different parts of the Wastelands. New books are planned to explore New California and the Mojave, the Capital Wasteland, the Commonwealth, and the Appalachian Wasteland. No release dates were provided for any of these new books, but it seems like the plan is to continue growing the Fallout RPG line for the foreseeable future.
Our Take: Solo RPGs Could Be Fun, Especially One Involving Ghouls And Fallout's Wasteland
Fallout Is The Right Kind Of World For A Solo RPG
I've played Modiphius's Captain Log, which is a solo TTRPG that uses the publisher's Star Trek Adventures game system. While I'm generally not a fan of solo games, Captain's Log was a lot of fun and kept me engaged while playing. I think the system will be even better for the Fallout RPG, as the world is a bit smaller but also has a lot more empty spaces that can be explored without stepping on the toes of the official canon. If you're a Fallout fan, you should keep an eye out for Lone Wanderer when it comes out next year.
