A24's Worst Reviewed Horror Film Of 2024 Finds Newfound Streaming Success After Box Office Disappointment

A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024 finds streaming success after disappointing at the box office. The independent studio's first horror film was director Robert Eggers' debut in 2015, The Witch, which received rave reviews from critics and became a sleeper hit at the box office. In turn, The Witch helped establish the distinct tone for A24 horror movies, which widely prioritize atmospheric tension over cheap jump scares, as seen in Talk to Me, Ti West's X trilogy, Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar, and more.

With the calendar having turned, 2024 was another strong year for A24. The overwhelming majority of their movies from the past year earned critical acclaim and, in turn, strong Rotten Tomatoes scores, including their Oscar contenders, Sing Sing (97%, their highest score of the year) and The Brutalist (92%). This extends to A24 horror as well, with I Saw the TV Glow (84%), MaXXXine (72%), and Heretic (91%) all finding success. However, two of A24's biggest flops of the year were horrorThe Front Room (42%) and Y2K (44%).

The Front Room Finds Streaming Success

It Ranks On Max's Top 10 In The US

The Front Room, A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024, finds streaming success after disappointing at the box office. Written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers, the brothers of Robert Eggers, their feature film debut follows a newly pregnant couple, Belinda and Norman, who are forced to take in the latter's estranged ailing stepmother named Solange. The cast includes Brandy as Belinda, Andrew Burnap as Norman, Kathryn Hunter as Solange, and Neal Huff as Pastor Lewis.

Now, after disappointing at the box office in September, A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024 has found streaming success on Max. Per FlixPatrol, The Front Room has ranked in Max's Top 10 in the United States for the past 10 days, currently ranking sixth. It ranks below titles such as Den of Thieves, Juror #2, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and above Sons of Ecstasy, The Accountant, Jason Bourne, and Warcraft.

What The Front Room's Streaming Success Means For The Movie

It Helps Redeem Its Box Office Disappointment

Though 2024 was a strong year for A24, the studio isn't immune to misfires, with The Front Room being their biggest flop. Though The Front Room reviews praised Kathryn Hunter's unforgettable and grotesque performance as a nightmarish in-law, the film's frequent reliance on scatological scares feels more off-putting than genuinely frightening. The movie also disappointed at the box office, making only $3.2 million. The Front Room's streaming success helps make up for that, though it still stands as one of A24's weaker films of 2024.
