After Amy Rose, Sonic the Hedgehog Needs to Bring Some of These Allies to the Big Screen
With Amy Rose set to make her long-awaited debut in Sonic the Hedgehog's movie universe, fans are already theorizing about which other fan-favorite characters might join the mix in the series' future installments. The games tend to be the first source material people turn to as they determine which characters will be adapted, but there are plenty of lesser-known characters from the comics who are just as worthy of joining Sonic on the big screen.
This list consists of characters from Archie Comics and IDW Publishing's Sonic comics, so characters from the video games will be excluded. While it's most likely that the games' characters will be prioritized to join the movies' continuity, it's still fun to speculate about which comic-exclusive allies of the Blue Blur could potentially work in an adaptation. Without further ado, here are 10 characters from Sonic the Hedgehog's comics that would make excellent additions to the films once Amy Rose arrives.
10 Nicole the Holo-Lynx (Archie)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog in Your Face! #1 by Mike Kanterovich, Ken Penders, and Art Mawhinney
Originating from Archie Comics' continuity, Nicole the Holo-Lynx is a unique character who could be interesting to bring to live action. She was initially created by Dr. Ellidy as a portable AI device utilized by Princess Sally Acorn, until she later develops the ability to project a holographic body that allows her to gain sentience and engage with the world around her.
A loyal member of the Freedom Fighters alongside Sally, Nicole is capable of integrating herself into other technological systems, which lets her download information or even take full control of enemy machinery. These skills could prove useful for Sonic and his allies in the movies, especially in a possible fight against Metal Sonic in the upcoming fourth film.
9 Bunnie Rabbot (Archie)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedegehog #3 by Michael Gallagher and Dave Manak
Bunnie Rabbot, later known as Bunnie D'Coolette after marrying Antoine D'Coolette, first appeared briefly in pinup poster form in 1992's Sonic the Hedgehog #1 before making her formal in-person debut shortly after. She is one of the most formidable fighters among Sonic's allies, with her strength amplified by cybernetic enhancements to certain body parts. Though she's often resented herself for being part machine, her contributions to the heroes' cause demonstrate her benevolent nature.
She frequently acts on the Freedom Fighters' behalf on high-stakes missions, including infiltrating the Egg Army while disguised as one of their own. Her courage makes her a valued member of Sonic's group, and they would benefit from her allegiance in the fight against foes like Eggman.
8 Lanolin the Sheep (IDW)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #2 by Ian Flynn and Adam Bryce Thomas
Lanolin got her start in the Sonic franchise as a background character from early issues of the IDW Publishing comics, only appearing in brief glimpses as she aided Jewel the Beetle in the Restoration's efforts. She eventually reveals that it was Sonic himself who inspired her to join the cause, since he saved her hometown from Badniks in the series' second issue.
Since her humble beginnings, Lanolin has gone on to lead the new-and-improved Diamond Cutters, the Restoration's rapid-response team of fighters that consists of other female heroes. Overall, Lanolin's dedication to her teammates - as well as her authoritative nature that persists even in the face of insurmountable odds - has cemented her as one of the series' most promising female characters.
7 Relic the Pika (Archie)
First Appearance: Sonic Universe #63 by Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley
Relic may seem like an odd choice to adapt, since she only appears in a handful of comic issues and thus isn't as recognizable as other characters in Sonic lore, but the role she plays indicates that she could be a valuable addition to the movies. Essentially, Relic is an archaeologist with a particular interest in studying the Master Emerald, the powerful artifact that Knuckles guards diligently on Angel Island.
Introducing someone like Relic who possesses deep knowledge of the Master Emerald could be beneficial to Knuckles, as he could learn more about it and the abilities it holds, and it would also give the heroes an advantage over enemies who seek it out. Relic would be an inspired pick, despite her minimal appearances.
6 Belle the Tinkerer (IDW)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #33 by Evan Stanley
Eggman's potential absence in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 doesn't mean that characters connected to him can be ruled out by default, and Belle the Tinkerer's story serves as proof of that fact. She was created by "Mr. Tinker", an alias of Eggman that was born when he lost his memories and changed his ways for the better. Belle has since aligned with Sonic and friends, making her an unexpected yet welcome ally.
Belle could easily be slotted into the Sonic movies by integrating the Mr. Tinker. Rather than killing off Eggman, he could lose his memories somehow and embody his kindly persona, thus creating Belle. After all, with Metal Sonic's introduction imminent, there's no better time to bring another creation of Robotnik's to the big screen.
5 Julie-Su the Echidna (Archie)
First Appearance: Knuckles the Echidna #4 by Ken Penders and Manny Galan
With Knuckles being so prevalent in the films, to the point where he's even starred in his own Knuckles spin-off series, he deserves a supporting cast that's all his own. That's where Julie-Su comes in. A fellow echidna from Archie's continuity, Julie-Su was orphaned at a young age and enlisted as part of the Dark Legion.Knuckles and the Chaotix then took her in, and he formed a bond with her as a result of their shared culture.
Knuckles has found a family in Sonic and Tails, yet he continues to be plagued by the tragedy of losing his people. Having another echidna around could give him someone he can truly confide in, who understands where he comes from in a way that no other Sonic character can.
4 Tangle the Lemur (IDW)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #4 by Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley
IDW Publishing's most prominent new character is undoubtedly Tangle the Lemur, who's risen to prominence in the years since her dynamic debut. Tangle resembles Sonic in many ways, considering they both have excitable personalities and an eagerness to leap into action without coming up with a solid plan beforehand. She's also a member of the heroic Diamond Cutters alongside Lanolin and Whisper the Wolf.
Tangle the Lemur, Whisper the Wolf, and Surge the Tenrec are all available as playable characters in the following two Sega Hardlight mobile games: Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. However, they have yet to appear in any of the main series' games.
Tangle has an advantage over other entries on this list in that she's technically canon to the Sonic the Hedgehog games as well, which means she has a higher chance of being adapted if the games are being implemented first and foremost. Although she hasn't explicitly appeared, she gets referenced in Sonic Frontiers, hinting at a bigger role for her beyond the comics.
3 Jules Hedgehog (Archie)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #46 by Ken Penders, Scott Fulop, and Nelson Ortega
While the games and movies both stray from showing much of Sonic's biological family, the comics have actually depicted his parents before and shed light on the people who influenced Sonic into becoming the hero he is today. Jules Hedgehog is Sonic's father in Archie Comics' continuity, and he's certainly not what most would expect thanks to his mechanical exterior. As it turns out, he was roboticized long ago in order to preserve his life after a battle went fatally wrong.
Longclaw raised Sonic in the films' continuity, but there's still room to expand upon his backstory and reveal who his birth parents were. Furthermore, Metal Sonic's inclusion opens up opportunities to involve different robots, and the most compelling one would have to be Sonic's father.
2 Whisper the Wolf (IDW)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #8 by Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley
When it comes to IDW Publishing's extensive roster of additions to the Sonic cast, there's no character more compelling than Whisper the Wolf. Wielding a Wispon that lets her channel the power of Sonic Colors' Wisps, she fights alongside the Diamond Cutters, though this isn't her first time as a member of the roster. In the original line-up, a member named Mimic betrayed the team and murdered them all - except Whisper.
There would be numerous advantages to including Whisper in Sonic's movie endeavors. For one, she could bring Wisps into the films' continuity and allow the characters to attain awesome new powers that would look stunning in action. Moreover, Whisper's lore deserves to be presented to a wider audience, as it's heartbreaking enough to have serious movie potential.
1 Princess Sally Acorn (Archie)
First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog #1/4 by Michael Gallagher and Scott Shaw
Sally Acorn holds the coveted status of the most popular character to be introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog's comics, and it's difficult not to see why. With her headstrong personality and key role in the Freedom Fighters, Princess Sally has made an indelible impression on readers - and that's without mentioning her romantic relationship with Sonic.
Bringing Sally to the films would bring the Freedom Fighters along with her, opening up the world of the films with a variety of other characters. Unfortunately, the Archie Comics characters aren't currently available to use due to an infamous lawsuit, so Sally won't be joining the movies' versions of Sonic and friends any time soon. Regardless, there's no question that she'd shine in the Sonic the Hedgehog films if given the opportunity.
