After Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, There’s One Remake I Want To See ASAP

With hopes for a Tony Hawk Pro-Skater 3 + 4 Remake on the horizon, there is more speculation and rumors about what another game could be if another one joined the roster. There are plenty of games to choose from, and with a solid foundation, any one of them could shine. However, if I had to pick one, there is one I would want to see before any of the others.

With Tony Hawk Pro-Skater 3 + 4 spoiled from the source code, it seems like the studio is going in order for the time being. That said, Tony Hawk Pro-Skater 5 came out well after the first four in 2015 and was released to mixed reviews. However, there were a large number of games released between those two under a myriad of different names, and one of them stands out as the perfect option for a remake.

The Tony Hawk’s Underground Games Deserve A Comeback

Games That Were Different From The Rest Of The Series

The games that followed Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 were the Underground games, and they were quite well received on the whole. The Underground games were also known as THUG 1 + 2, and the first one in particular was very different from the proceeding entries in the series. It was originally released on the PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater Nintendo Switch Release Date Announced

While Tony Hawk's Pro Skater made its way to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in March, the Nintendo Switch release date was left open ended.... until now.

It didn’t come to the US on a PC until a port was released in 2005, but many fans regard it as being one of the best in the series. With such high accolades and being the next game in line in order of release date, it deserves to have a chance to come back. It’s also very different from the previous four games, as players have the ability to edit a large part of the in-game content and have a fully customizable character to play as.

There is also a large amount of new gameplay mechanics that didn’t exist in the first version of the game, along with an entirely new story mode that throws players around the world and has them riding on the more illegal side of life. There are big stunts and a large number of story levels, which would be great to look at with new modern graphics.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Remakes Pave The Way For THUG

Each Game Built On The Ones That Came Before

The previous games did not have the same elements as the Underground games, but they did open the way for them. Without the original games, it’s unlikely that a grittier, more story-focused game would emerge. The previous games were mostly focused on just making big tricks, while the THUG games had a little bit more going on in the background.

There are even costumes and characters available only if you first complete the story mode. Without a more laid-back set of games that were more about skateboarding, we might not have seen this one coming. It is likely that things like Grand Theft Auto paved the way toward this sort of game, as the interest in the “underground” side of things would have been much higher.

Still, the shift from what was essentially an arcade game and a limited number of moves to at least being able to have a custom character to a career mode and then finally the full-fledged story mode that is seen in THUG shows that the team kept improving the games and that what happened in earlier versions was just going to get upgraded from there. Later on, the series even added a snowboarding mechanic, but that would not be for a while.

There’s Still Nothing Quite Like Tony Hawk’s Underground

Nothing Else Has Come Close To Being Like It In The Series

Only a few of the Tony Hawk games ever featured a story mode, and the two Underground games were half of that exception. Additionally, they are the only two games that have an interconnected and sequential story mode, giving them even more reason to release them as a dual-game remake. While the story in THUG 2 was not as well-received, a remake would allow the developers to revisit some of that, giving it a chance to shine. It deserves that chance since the rest of the sub-series was very well done and a step up from all previous versions.

Additionally, while this is true in many of the games, THUG in particular led us on a trip around the world multiple times. You not only go across the country but visit multiple competitions and cities around the globe. There are some moments in the story modes that defy expectations, and some of them are just crazy enough to make you stare in disbelief or even chuckle a little. But there are consequences in the second game’s story because of what happened in the first.

Tony Hawk jumped on stage at a London show of a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Cover Band and surprised everyone by singing along to his own soundtrack.

The “underground” nature of the game isn’t something you find anywhere else either, and you pull off some wild antics throughout both games. While a lot of the arcade levels are very similar, there was a fun classic mode in Underground 2 that let you play remade classic levels in a certain amount of time, which is something fun that could be even better in a remake.

The amount of customization in these two games is through the roof, and there are some fun novelty characters that appear in this one, such as Iron Man, who hadn’t even made his MCU debut yet when this game was released. THUG was also the first game where you could just get off your board and explore various levels on foot if you wanted to. You get to travel around some of these locations, helping people out and getting them to trust you after being betrayed.

You will have to resort to underhanded methods multiple times, gaining notoriety as a skater and in your underground activities. With any luck, we will all get to see the wild factor of the THUG games in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series sometime soon with a new remake to give it all the attention it deserves. It might be a wild ride, but that’s the fun of skateboarding anyway, right?
