American Idol’s Carrie Underwood Breaks Down Crying In Emotional New Promo After Katy Perry Reveals How She Really Feels About Her Replacement

American Idol season 23 released a brand-new promo featuring an emotional breakdown from Carrie Underwood after former judge Katy Perry revealed her feelings surrounding her replacement. Throughout the run of American Idol, former contestants and winners have come back to the show to make appearances and, in some circumstances, judge the competition on a trial basis. With Carrie Underwood, the winner of American Idol season 4 and a country music megastar, coming back to the series to judge American Idol season 23 with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, things are changing for the better for the long-running talent competition.

Carrie Underwood was visibly emotional about discovering heartfelt new talent on American Idol.

In an emotional new promo for the upcoming season (via E! News) of American Idol, a group of brand-new talent is shown heading into the audition room to sing for the judges, each sharing snippets of their story for the group. One contestant, who shared that he was raised by his grandparents “from the moment I turned 2,” brought his family and judge Carrie to tears. Sobbing after his audition and likely the speech he gave about his grandmother, who was brought into the room after his American Idol audition, Carrie was visibly emotional about discovering heartfelt new talent.

What Carrie Getting Emotional During Auditions Means For American Idol

Carrie Is Bringing Her Own Experiences To The Table

Although Carrie has returned to American Idol in the past on special occasions, her first season as a judge marks the first time a former winner has come back to the show in a judge’s chair. Carrie, whom former American Idol judge Katy praised as the right choice for the job in a recent interview, hasn’t been back in an audition room for the show since she was in the spotlight, so seeing it from the other side was likely surreal. Seeing Carrie getting emotional about a potential cast member’s story and performance is exactly what viewers are looking for.

While Carrie may not have been able to show the full capacity she has to judge the series and relate to the contestants yet, it’s clear that she’s going to be able to bring a different level of emotion to Idol. Though the other judges and host Ryan Seacrest often find themselves empathizing with the contestants on a purely emotional level, Carrie will share some incredibly unique lived experiences with the new contestants, which could prove to be a great run on American Idol. Carrie’s emotional appearance in the promoproves she’ll bring a specific new energy to the table.

Our Take On Carrie Underwood’s Emotional American Idol Preview

Carrie Still Has To Prove Herself

Although Carrie appears to be a great fit for the judges' panel for American Idol season 23, something she’ll still need to prove is whether she's going to be a good fit for this position. Banking on being able to take the lead from Lionel and Luke, Carrie likely understands that her role is to be more nurturing and understanding of the contestants in some way because of her time as an American Idol contestant herself. Even so, Carrie will need to ensure she can bring her unique experiences to the series.

American Idol premieres Sunday, March 9 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC, then streams the following day on Hulu.
