Attack on Titan Killed Many of Its Heroes, And One Star Is Shocked Their Character Lived
Since Attack on Titanis so heavy on death, it seemed no character was safe from an untimely demise, and even the anime's voice actors were unsure who would survive to the end of the series. One voice actor was shocked to discover the character he played was never killed, because he did not expect him to make it until the story's conclusion.
Connie Springer's voice actor, Hiro Shimono, could not have been more surprised when his character, Connie, survived the war against the Titans and the Rumbling. He had prepared for the opposite to occur, so both the ending of the Attack on Titan anime and his character's final fate were definitely a shock to him.
Connie Springer’s Voice Actor Was Shocked That His Character Survived
Hiro Shimono Was Fully Prepared for Connie’s Eventual Death, but It Never Occurred
In a special interview and film screening with Oricon News to celebrate the Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK movie, Shimono and his fellow voice actors commented on the finale of the anime series and their excitement for the upcoming movie. Shimono discussed Connie's story arc in Attack on Titan, as well as his astonishment that he did not die. He explained that he was fully expecting Connie's death at some point and that he "didn't think Connie would continue to live. I was happy to run through until the end [of the series] but kept wondering when Connie would [die]."
Connie is a member of the 104th Division of the Survey Corps, taking on the crucial role of defending humanity against Titans in Levi Ackerman's squad. Although not a Titan shifter himself, he provided valuable combat skills in the war against the man-eating Titans, and comic relief too. He formed a strong bond with Jean and Sasha and the trio managed to find moments of laughter even in the most dire circumstances of their lives, which helped brighten up the otherwise dismal Attack on Titan series when it needed an occasional cheery or funny moment to break up all the sorrow.
Attack on Titan’s Constant Death Showcases the Harsh Realities of War
These Tragedies Were Necessary To Convey the Series’ Messages, but a Few Heroes Like Connie Survived
Countless members of the Survey Corps died during battles, including one of Connie's best friends, Sasha Braus. Sasha's sudden death at the hands of Gabi Braun was completely unexpected and further highlighted that any character could die at any time, especially since the series took place during a time of war. Isayama's most pivotal core message is the futility of war and the sheer magnitude of lives lost in the process, so it makes sense that millions of characters died throughout the course of Attack on Titan, especially once Eren started the Rumbling with the Founding Titan.
Luckily for Hiro Shimono, his character, Connie, was one of the few survivors of the Rumbling, and went on to work with Armin and the other Alliance members to attempt to bring lasting peace to a world shaken by the aftermath of the conflict between humanity and the Titans. The series' saddest deaths, such as Eren's and Hange's, were necessary to convey the pivotal anti-war messages in Isayama's story and showcase just how brutal the conflict was, but not every character needed to die, and thankfully, Connie was one of the fortunate survivors of Attack on Titan'smost violent war.
