Batman Channels Dune in Live-Action With This Viral Tactical Suit

DC Comics’ Caped Crusader, Batman, and the sand-swept world of Dune couldn’t be more different, but with the Dark Knight having a specialized batsuit for virtually every situation he finds himself in, surviving a hypothetical trip to Arrakis would be as easy as switching costumes, jumping into a bat-themed spaceship, and blasting off to the stars. In a new cosplay image, Batman gets a militarized makeover that could work in Dune’s sci-fi universe, proving this DC hero truly is prepared for any situation.

A tactical take on Batman’s iconic superhero outfit shared on social media via Instagram by @batsturd, this creator specializes in bringing fresh creative energy to Bruce Wayne’s alter ego, with most of @batsturd’s homemade looks tweaking Batman’s design in never-before-seen ways exclusive to the cosplay community.

Giving Batman more than a few redesigns in the past, @batsturd has created hybrid heroes that combine Batman with other popular characters, like Lobo, Spawn, Carnage, and even The Punisher, showing just how versatile Batman is as a cosplay subject as well as how talented @batsturd can be when designing these unique custom looks.

Though @batsturd frames this badass Batman variant as an armed-to-the-teeth, tactical suit-wearing Dark Knight complete with military dog tags and hovering helicopters, the shifting sand dune background and dusty batsuit elicit vibes of Dune’s sweeping sci-fi saga, specifically the desert planet of Arrakis on which the constant struggles of the Freman race and the ever-growing need for more spice production duel for relevance. No stranger to venturing to far-off worlds to enact justice on the local populace’s superstitious and cowardly lot, Batman — as originally presented here — excels as a strategic military soldier just as much as a space-faring rebel warrior.

Equipped with a gas mask, goggles, a bat-branded assault weapon, and more pouches and military accessories than fans can shake a batarang at, @batsturd does a great job of grounding Batman in a war zone environment that can easily be reimagined as ground zero in Paul Atreides’ holy war. Replacing the helicopters at the top of the image with Dune’s Ornithopters and keeping in mind the encroaching dust storm brewing to the left of @batsturd that could be harboring a giant sandworm, it wouldn't take much to turn this tactical suit Batman into the latest member of the Freman’s forces.

Recent live-action adaptations of Batman and Dune have re-captured audience’s love for these characters and their fictional worlds, with @batsturd making a case for a film that could follow Batman as he tracks down the origin of a new psychedelic drug flooding Gotham called “spice,” only to travel to Arrakis and get pulled into the middle of a war led by a mysterious messianic figure named Paul Atreides. Despite this idea being a license to print money at the box office, fans are likelier to see Batman enter Dune’s universe through comic events, something DC needs to make real immediately!
