Below Deck Down Under's Captain Jason Chambers Should Never Have Been Cast (His Sultry Photoshoot Is One Red Flag But I Think There's More)

Below Deck Down Under's Captain Jason Chambers has been exhibiting some red-flag behavior this season of the high-seas adventure reality show. Captain Jason has been a cast regular on the show since it premiered in 2022. Besides his rugged good looks, the Australian charter captain has been a steady presence, masterfully guiding his crew through charters with wealthy clients and becoming known as a reliable leader. Captain Jason brings calm to the chaos that can be super yacht charting.

This season, however, I'm second-guessing Captain Jason's role on the show. From Captain Jason's overtly sexual promotional campaigns to his struggles with Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph, I think Jason might need to spend more time focused on running the yacht and less time running around on a beach in wet clothes to appeal to the show's female viewership. After so many seasons on reality TV, Jason's "gone Hollywood," and I'm not sure that's what the show needs.

Captain Jason's Smoldering Photoshoot Raised Eyebrows

Captain Jason Is Leaning Into Sex Symbol Status

Captain Jason's fans are scratching their heads at Jason's sexualized promotional campaigns for Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason feels way too professional to participate in these promotions, but there he is, leaning into his "sex symbol" status, splayed out on the beach in soaking wet clothes, or slowly emerging from the ocean and walking in slow motion towards the shore. It's somewhat surprising, given the professional nature of Captain Jason's position.

For me, Captain Jason's sexy photo shoot is a red flag since he always seemed to brush off the praise for his looks to focus on the job at hand. The promos read more like advertisements for The Bachelor or Love Island, shows that are a bit more shameless about promoting their attractive casts. Undoubtedly, Below Deck has attractive crew members, but I don't remember the show capitalizing on it the way they are this season.

Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph Doesn't Believe In Captain Jason

Tzarina Lost Faith In Captain Jason

Aside from his photo shoot antics, Captain Jason clashed with the boat's chef, Tzarina Mace-Ralph, over crew food during episode 4. In this TikTok posted by Hayu, Captain Jason wants Tzarina to spin her crew lunch into a brunch, while Tzarina wants to make them more food. Tzarina ends up complaining to Chief Stew Lara Rigby about Captain Jason's orders, and unfortunately for Tzarina, Captain Jason overhears her conversation with Lara.

"Don't start picking a fight with me. I'm on your side. I'm here to support you, to make your job easier. I've given a solution, and then I walk in and you've got a problem with what I'm giving? Is this the way it's going to be all season? No. I'm not going to put up with it."

For Tzarina to push back against Captain Jason, it means that she doesn't fully trust him and his guidance. That's not a good sign for a leader, especially a captain on a boat, where order is required. Captain Jason has lost the trust of his crew somewhere along the way, which could spell disaster.

Will Captain Jason Remain On The Show?

Captain Jason Chambers had a few other misses this season, like when he sat down with the guests for dinner and couldn't hide his disdain for the soup and cheese toastie Tzarina prepared. It wasn't professional of him, and he needs to get a better poker face in these situations. His delivery when speaking to Tzarina later about the crew lunches also needs some refining. He was overtly harsh and made Tzarina cry. That's not the kind of leadership the crew needs.

Still, despite these setbacks, I think he'll be back since his physical attraction is a big pull for some fans, and Bravo likes to keep its fans fed. Bravo has invested in Captain Jason big time. They even convinced him to let his guard down for the promotional photo shoot, which I can only assume means Captain Jason enjoys his role on Below Deck Down Under and wants to continue.

Below Deck Down Under airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Bravo.
