Below Deck Sailing Yacht: 8 Signs Gary King Will Be Replaced By Keith Allen In Season 6 (Will Gary's Bad Behavior Help Keith Move Up In Rank?)
Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Gary King has been struggling in his role throughout the season, but the First Officer appears as though he’ll be replaced by deckhand Keith Allen in the next season of the series. Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, viewers have had the chance to see Gary’s failings as a First Officer while watching Keith do his best on the exterior team. While Gary has been a mainstay on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Keith was in his first season of the series this year and showed off his skills on the deck.
As viewers got to know Keith, they learned more about the deckhand and saw him evolving as a member of the crew. Keith’s genuine abilities were strong from the beginning of the season, and his ability to take direction was something that Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew members and viewers like to see. While Keith was learning and growing, Gary was having one of the toughest charter seasons of his career after serious allegations of sexual misconduct came out about him midway through the filming of the season. The swiftness with which Below Deck viewers dropped Gary was astonishing.
Moving through the charter season, it appeared that Gary had issues with most of the crew aboard Parsifal III. His issues with Daisy Kelliher in particular were difficult, as the pair had some tension to work through from the previous season of the series. Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, viewers got the chance to see Daisy and her long-time potential love interest Colin MacRae finally go for a relationship, but Gary’s jealousy became too much for either of them. After struggling in their lives outside the show, Daisy and Colin broke up, while Gary and Daisy’s friendship crumbled.
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Gary struggled to find his footing as Keith did a great job fitting in and finding his way. As viewers got to know Keith better, many felt it would be more fitting to have him aboard Parsifal III’s crew than Gary, even though the First Officer has been around for several years. Though Gary’s dramatics have been good for the show at times, his behavior hasn’t been the most ideal as viewers have become more aware of his actions outside of the series. For the show’s sake, Keith could be a better fit.
8 Captain Glenn Said He Wants To Work With Keith Again
He Wants Keith To Return To Parsifal III
Captain Glenn Shephard has been difficult throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, as he’s seemed to be more egocentric as the season continued on. While Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 came to a close with Captain Glenn appearing satisfied with the way the charter season had unfolded, there were some difficulties he likely hadn’t expected throughout his time aboard Parsifal III, one being Gary’s overall behavior. Though Captain Glenn didn’t seem to have major issues with Gary, it was clear he was under performing.
Rather than moving through the charter season with disdain, however, Captain Glenn seemed to keep his head up. One of the highlights of the season for the Captain appeared to be working with Keith, who was easily manageable and seemed to give him a lot of effort. Keith’s abilities have proven to be strong, leading Captain Glenn to share he’d be happy to work with him again in the future.
7 Keith Had A Relationship With Daisy
The Pair Are Still Close
Keith kept to himself for the majority of the beginning of the season, but throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, he opened up to be more dynamic on camera. With a funny, kind-hearted personality, Keith was able to make it clear that he was a lot more than met the eye at the beginning of the charter season. Keith's overall attitude shifted throughout the charter season, especially as he got closer to Chief Stew Daisy.
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Daisy's relationship with Keith grew stronger and though the couple didn't wind up making things official, they orbited each other for the better part of a year romantically before deciding to stick things out as friends. Despite the fact that they didn't wind up becoming inherently romantic, Keith and Daisy's relationship was sweet to watch unfold. Daisy's interactions with Gary, on the other hand, were nothing but difficult.
6 Keith Was A Hard Worker Throughout Season 5
He Did A Great Job
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Keith proved that his skills aboard Parsifal III were something he should be proud of. While Keith may have been struggling in some of the more interpersonal moments of the season, he did a great job working through his time aboard the superyacht, especially in moments of struggle. Showing off his ability to navigate through conflict easily, Keith was a fantastic addition to the sailing yacht's deck crew.
Gary, on the other hand, has always had a great work ethic but presents a bit more of a problem working aboard Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5's charter crew. Gary's behavior has been difficult throughout the last few seasons, but his issues with the rest of the crew came to a head during the most recent season. Overall, Keith's behavior and performance have outweighed Gary's expertise.
5 Keith Can Put Work Before Pleasure
He Rejected Danni’s Advances
While he did wind up getting romantic with Daisy, Keith's behavior throughout the season proved he's able to separate his work from his personal life, which can be tough on a Below Deck superyacht. Keith's impressive willpower to stay focused on his job in light of intense personal feelings made it clear from the start that he was incredibly dedicated to his work aboard Parsifal III. Early in the season, stew Danni Warren showed interest in Keith romantically, but her pushy behavior wasn't something Keith appeared interested in.
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Keith made it clear that though he wasn't a robot who didn't have any feelings, he was there to work. Putting his work aboard Parsifal III first isn't something Gary's ever done, despite having a good work ethic. Keith's ability to compartmentalize makes him a better fit for the crew long-term than Gary's ever been.
4 Keith Doesn't Over Do It With Drinking
He’s Careful To Keep Things Professional
While Keith wasn't prudish about his ability to hold his alcohol or party with the crew, he was clear that he was on Parsifal III to get down to business, not to party. Though Keith was able to indulge in the crew nights out on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, he didn't make the party his whole personality. Separating himself for the betterment of his career, Keith took part in the crew bonding moments and had a good time, but he didn't overdo it.
Gary, on the other hand, has had a difficult time curbing his drinking throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. While Gary has always been known as more of a partier, it's been clear that he was working with somewhat less self-control than what was required to keep him stable. Gary's drinking impacted the entirety of the crew, while Keith was able to keep himself steady.
3 Keith Is Easy To Work With
He’s Not A Micromanager Like Gary
Keith's time on Parsifal III allowed viewers to see that he's a hard worker who the rest of the crew didn't take issue with, even during stressful moments. It was evident from early on that Keith had a good head on his shoulders and didn't want to cause any problems during his time on Parsifal III. The Below Deck Sailing Yacht star was able to work through his issues easily and didn't have any issues delegating tasks when needed without micromanaging anyone else on his team.
While Gary's management of the deck team did allow them to be successful throughout the season, he was always struggling to keep his authority steady. Rather than being mindful of how he was coming off, Gary was a micromanager all season long and didn't look like someone you'd want to work with. Gary's inability to stay calm and collected made him difficult to envision as a favorable crew member.
2 Keith Got Along With Everyone On The Crew
Not Just The Deck Team
Despite having a few hiccups here and there, the majority of the sentiment surrounding Keith from the rest of the crew made it clear that he wasn't an issue for his Below Deck crew mates. Keith's attitude and general abilities made him a great crew member for the rest of Parsifal III to work with. His attitude and sense of humor made him fun to be around, and his abilities made him a great deckhand to rely on.
Throughout his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Gary has been an incredibly competent First Officer, but his behavior has been tough for many to wrap his mind around. Prone to drama, Gary has been a difficult part of the crew for others to handle. While he has a vast expanse of knowledge and experience, Gary has too much negative dramatic energy to rely on.
1 New Crew Member Would Likely Rather Work With Keith
Gary's Misconduct Scandal Has Stained His Reputation
After spending a season getting to know Keith, many of his fellow crew members appeared to have a genuine affinity for him. It appeared Keith would be someone many of the Parsifal III crew members would be interested in working with all over again. The same, unfortunately, can't be said for Gary. Throughout Gary's time on the show, he's proven he's not the best person despite his solid work ethic.
Gary's behavior overall has been particularly difficult for the rest of the crew to wrap their minds around, especially once he got called out for sexual misconduct. While Gary has vehemently denied the accusations, it's been clear that they've done a number on his reputation throughout the Below Deck franchise and beyond. After Gary's appearance on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 was interrupted with such harrowing reports, it's unlikely his crew mates would want to work with him again.
