Suits LA has an obvious replacement for Harvey Specter, and he seems to be the perfect lead character for the upcoming Suits spinoff. Born out of Suits’ astonishing success on streaming, NBC’s Suits LA will return to the world of the fan-favorite legal drama, this time with a completely different setting and all-new characters. Suits LA will take place on an entertainment law firm in Los Angeles, Black Lane Law, and will see Stephen Amell as prosecutor-turned-high-profile lawyer Ted Black. Amell is joined by Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.
Suits LA’s main cast looks very exciting, especially because they do not seem to be just new versions of Suits’ most famous characters. That said, it is difficult not to associate Ted Black with Harvey Specter as both are former New York prosecutors who left public service to become some of the most successful, expensive attorneys in the country. Amell’s Ted Black is expected to be just as good of a lawyer as Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter, if not better, according to the character himself in the latest Suits LA promo.

The newest Suits LA TV spot spotlights Stephen Amell’s character as he makes his sales pitch to a client, played by Victoria Justice. Ted Black describes himself as the “best attorney in the country” and asks his clients to let them prove that to them. The promo sees Victoria Justice’s character, Dylan Pryor, asking Ted if they are going to fight, to which Amell’s character responds “We’re gonna dance.”Ted Black also describes himself as the guy who they send when the client has no chance but needs a win.

In just 30 seconds, Amell’s Ted Black has made quite the first impression. While he had seen some official images from Suits LA, this is the first time we’re getting to see the spinoff’s lead character in action. Although it is still too soon to say how Suits LA will compare to the original series, Ted Black appears to be just as confident about his skills as Harvey Specter was. In fact, Troy Winbush’s Kevin compared Ted to Harvey, saying that the latter is the only person he knows that is cockier than the former.

While Suits was technically a legal drama, the show was more about power dynamics and how confident a character could be amidst the trickiest situations. Mike Ross himself was not even an actual lawyer for most of the show but rather an incredibly intelligent person trying to make it through a bunch of challenges every episode. Of course, Suits was also about the best lawyers in their respective fields showing how good they are, especially Harvey. Known as the “best closer in the city,”Harvey always knew what to do and when to do it to win a case.
Replacing Harvey as the face of the franchise in a new series is not an easy task.
Ted Black’s “best attorney in the country” line shows that not only he is one of the top lawyers in this universe but that he is “cocky” enough about it too. These are two essential ingredients to create a lead character in the Suits universe. Ted Can Be Different Enough From Harvey In Suits LA
It will be impossible not to point out similarities and parallels between Suits LA and Suits. That said, the spinoff series cannot be just “Suits but set in Los Angeles.” Suits was a very unique legal drama in the sense that it made the characters far more interesting than the weekly cases, allowing viewers to connect with that world more easily. Suits was not worried about legal accuracy either, focusing on dramatic moments over the more realistic aspects of handling a lawsuit. The original series also had lots of funny moments and complicated romances.
These are all elements that Suits LA can incorporate while putting its own spin on them. However, characters like Ted Black should not be defined as just replacements for their Suits predecessors. The fact that Gabriel Macht will appear in Suits LA can contribute to the spinoff in that regard, as it will allow us to see how different Stephen Amell’s character is from Harvey Specter. Between his past and what prompted him to create his own firm, Ted Black will most likely be very different from Harvey after all.
