Bethesda Finally Breaks Silence On Starfield's Future, Promising "Exciting Things" This Year

While Starfieldmay not have had the impact Bethesda would have liked, the studio promises players that it's still working on it. Following the release of the game's first paid-for DLC Shattered Space, Bethesda has been somewhat quiet regarding the future of its sprawling sci-fi RPG. Despite reassurances that another expansion is in development, the developer has yet to shed more light on what the community can expect going forward, resulting in many players questioning Starfield's future.

Posting on X, Bethesda responded to a fan's request for more details on Starfield's upcoming content by confirming that it has "a lot of exciting things planned for the game this year" that it currently can't share. The studio also thanked players for their patience and feedback, promising that it "can't wait" to provide insight into what the community can expect in 2025. No further information was provided, but players can expect some more meaningful updates in the coming months.

Starfield Isn't A Live Service Game

There's A Reason The Updates Are So Infrequent

Despite Bethesda promising an assortment of post-launch support for Starfield, it's worth bearing in mind that the game isn't designed to be a live-service experience. Unlike Fallout 76, which is built around seasonal content and frequent content patches, Starfield is a single-player RPG, so players can't expect it to receive a near-continuous string of updates. Having said that, Bethesda has been open about its intentions to grow the game over time, going so far as to confirm the next expansion before even releasing Shattered Space.

It seems possible that Starfield's next DLC could arrive in 2025 but it's difficult to say for certain without knowing the project's scope. Shattered Space proved to be a disappointment to the community, so Bethesda may be taking its time with the next expansion to hone in on the various issues and properly implement player feedback. In the interim, smaller updates that add more quality-of-life improvements would be appreciated, especially if they're not launched as Creations.

It's not unprecedented for a game to be saved by its post-launch support but I don't think adding more content to Starfield is what it needs. Bethesda should rather focus on refining the core experience to deliver a game that's smoother and less broken up by menus and loading screens; being able to explore more worlds is interesting, but not when the foundation is so unwieldy. I hope future updates focus more on elevating the gameplay rather than simply giving players more of the same.
