Betty Gilpin's recent leading role in American Primeval marks an exciting streak that should continue in another highly anticipated Netflix series. Gilpin stars as Sara Rowell in American Primeval alongside Taylor Kitsch, Dane DeHaan, Shea Whigham, and Saura Lightfoot-Leon. Her character, who harbors a grave secret, must survive the gruesome Old West terrain of Utah Territory in the late 1850s, where ambitions and interests collide over control of the land.
Betty Gilpin began her acting career in 2008, appearing in movies such as Death in Love and Ghost Town and TV shows like New Amsterdam and Fringe. Originally from New York, Gilpin gained prominence for her role as Dr. Carrie Roman in seasons 5-7 of Nurse Jackie. After playing another doctor in the final season of the Showtime series Masters of Sex, Gilpin starred as Debbie Eagan in Netflix's GLOW alongside Alison Brie and Marc Maron. Betty Gilpin was one of the best things about GLOW, which was unfairly canceled by Netflix despite its critical acclaim and three Emmy wins. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, many viewers believe that GLOW had certainly earned at least one more season before it was canceled in 2019. Similarly, Gilpin is also one of the best characters in American Primeval, which interestingly doesn't have the critical reception of GLOW. However, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 68% and an audience score of 88%, American Primeval has been a huge streaming success throughout January 2025.
American Primeval was initially designed as a miniseries but due to its popularity, there have already been talks about making an American Primeval season 2, which Betty Gilpin could return for. With the success of GLOW and the popularity of American Primeval, Netflix will likely want to include Gilpin in more of their future projects as well. This could become a challenge as Betty has already signed on for an Untitled Nurse Jackie Sequel series at Showtime. Based on the novel The Cure for Death by Lightning by Candice Millard, the Netflix series follows the unbelievable true story of U.S. President James Garfield and his secret admirer, Charles Guiteau, who assassinated him.
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss scored on Netflix with 2024's 3 Body Problem. With an ensemble cast that includes Michael Shannon, Nick Offerman, and Matthew Macfadyen, Death by Lighting is sure to be another great showcase of Betty Gilpin's talents on Netflix following American Primeval.
