Bleach Creator Just Dropped a Bombshell About the Afterlife No One Saw Coming

Bleach creator Tite Kubo has just dropped a new reveal about the afterlife, and it’s one no one saw coming. As simple as Bleach’s afterlife might be, the series has never addressed what happens to the Quincies when they die, as Ichigo and Uryu’s mothers never appear in Soul Society, and the few Sternritters with some degree of morality never reappear as souls in Can’t Fear Your Own World, either.

The question of what happens to Quincies after death has always been a big one, and there’s finally something of an answer for it. In the latest installment of Klub Outside, Tite Kubo’s blog where he semi-regularly answers Bleach trivia, Kubo was asked about what happens to Quincies when they die, and surprisingly, Bleach creator Tite Kubo revealed that Quincies go somewhere other than Soul Society when they die. Kubo didn’t say anything else, but just that small reveal has major implications for the Quincies and Bleach, as a whole.

Bleach’s New Afterlife Reveal Highlights How Bizarre Quincies Are

Bleach's Quincies Just Got Even Weirder

As surprising as the reveal about the Quincies and the afterlife is, it makes sense with everything that’s known about them. Not only do Quincies develop powers and fighting styles completely different from almost every other faction in Bleach, but with how they completely extinguish the souls of Hollows they kill, their very existence is antithetical to the basic setup of Bleach’s world, something that’s been a plot point numerous times throughout the series. The bizarre nature of Bleach’s Quincies perfectly justifies them going to a separate place after death, and the only question left is where that place is.

As for where that other place Quincies go to when they die, that might already have an explanation. Yhwach is the original source of all Quincy powers and can even absorb them at will via the Auswahlen, so with that in mind, Quincy souls might be absorbed into Yhwach when they die as a means of tying into his history of lending power to others since his youth. All of that is hypothetical, of course, but if it’s true, then it would truly emphasize how much of a monster Yhwach is by subjecting countless people to such a horrific fate.

Bleach’s New Afterlife Reveal Can Finally Connect The Story To Its Secret Sequel

How Bleach Might Finally Connect To Burn The Witch

The simplest idea for what happens to Quincies after they die, however, might relate to Burn the Witch. Burn the Witch takes place in the same universe as Bleach and is set around the Western branch of Soul Society, and since the roots of Quincies are Germanic in origin, Quincies might go to the Western branch of Soul Society shown in Burn the Witch after they die. That would conflict with Tite Kubo’s statement about Quincies not going to Soul Society, but he could have been explicitly referring to the Eastern branch, so it’s not entirely off the table.

With Bleach and Burn the Witch still having new content in development, they’re bound to cross over at some point, and not only would dead Quincies popping up in Europe give Ichigo and his friends a reason to go there, but Quincies going to the Western branch of Soul Society when they die could allow Ichigo and Uryu a chance to reunite with their mothers after spending so many years apart from them. Overall, there are plenty of great story opportunities with this new afterlife reveal, and with any luck, Bleach won’t hesitate to capitalize on them.
