Boruto Confirms a Surprising Ninja is Key to Winning the Final Battle, and They Aren't Who Anyone Would Expect

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has been a new opportunity for the cast of this beloved franchise to shine in a completely new environment. While the main characters are still the same as in the first part of the manga, there is no doubt that several side characters have made important contributions to the story. One who will only continue to become more relevant is Sumire, a cast member who has not done much in quite a while.

Chapter #18 of the manga has turned this soft-spoken and kind girl into one of the only people in the entire ninja world who could help Boruto during the final battle. Sumire knows the words needed to activate Kawaki’s failsafe, making her a valuable ally for the protagonist. This means that, hopefully, another character who did not get much spotlight in the series until now will get the time to shine before Boruto ends.

Sumire Knows Kawaki’s Greatest Weakness

Sumire Can Stop Kawaki Using Amado's Failsafe

In chapter #18 of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga, Sumire arrives at Amado’s place right as Kawaki is attacking him. The cyborg was angry about the limiters placed on his body by the scientist, as they greatly decreased his combat abilities. To save himself from an almost certain doom, Amado uses an odd phrase that instantly knocks Kawaki out. Sumire immediately understands that the words spoken by the scientist must have been the failsafe he put on Boruto’s brother to stop him in case he ever went rogue.

Besides Amado, no other character has been revealed to possess the knowledge necessary to activate Kawaki's failsafe. This means that Sumire is one of the few people in the world who knows the phrase needed to stop Kawaki without a fight, a tool that will become invaluable for the heroes down the line. Once Kawaki betrays his current allies and the big battle between brothers commences, Sumire could become a vital key to victory.

Kawaki is destined to become the protagonist's final challenge, despite having a temporary alliance with Boruto at the moment. When that final battle arrives, Sumire could be one of the most important allies Naruto’s son could have by his side. The cyborg is already a major threat, and the story hints that Kawaki will only continue becoming more dangerous with the massive powerup he will be given soon. Having a way to put him to sleep and avoiding another tragedy could be exactly what the heroes might need soon.

Kawaki Might See Sumire as a Threat

Despite Kawaki not directly addressing the issue once he wakes up in chapter #18, he clearly knows that Sumire holds the key to his failsafe. At the time, it was understandable for the cyborg not to bring it up, as convincing Amado to augment his combat abilities was more important. Sumire is also not a major threat to him as of chapter #18, as the girl has not displayed any outright hatred against him. Nonetheless, Kawaki has already shown the lengths that his paranoia can push him to when he sealed away Naruto and Hinata.

Sumire is not an active combatant now, but she has proven herself as one of Boruto’s most loyal allies. If she is forced to decide who to support between the two Uzumaki brothers, there is no doubt that she will follow the blonde. Kawaki is more than willing to destroy the people who stand in his way, and with him being one of the most powerful fighters alive, Sumire would have no way to defend herself. Even though she has a major advantage over him, she has also become one of his biggest targets.

Sumire Never Got a Chance to Shine in Boruto

Although Sumire has become a major threat to Kawaki after Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #18, her previous appearances in the series might suggest that this plot point will not be properly utilized. Despite being a recurring character in the manga, as she is present in almost all entries, Sumire has done almost nothing to progress the story. Her major and latest contribution has been establishing a love triangle between her, Sarada, and Boruto. Given how little the writers tend to use her, it is possible that her knowing Kawaki’s failsafe will never be brought up again.

The intricacies and mysteries of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga continue to grow bigger with each new chapter. Still, the writers have before them a perfect opportunity to properly utilize Sumire’s character entertainingly and interestingly.
