Brilliant Minds Just Cornered NBC Into Renewing It For Season 2

SPOILERS ahead for Brilliant Minds season 1, episodes 12 and 13 (the season finale).Brilliant Minds' season 1 finale may have backed NBC into a corner when it comes to making a renewal decision. Although the finale ends with several significant cliffhangers, NBC hasn't decided whether Brilliant Minds season 2 will happen. The neurology-focused medical drama concluded its first season with a two-hour finale that features a shocking twist. After spending the first hour dealing with the building collapse, the series reveals that a seemingly random doctor (Mandy Patinkin) who was helping treat collapse victims is actually Noah Wolf — Oliver's (Zachary Quinto) supposedly dead father.

During the second half of the finale, Oliver wants to focus on the case of a pastor who is having strange hallucinations and perception issues, such as believing her husband is a hat on a rack. However, his world is turned upside down when he learns his father is alive.To make matters worse, Oliver stands up Nichols (Teddy Sears) to meet his father in a diner to find out why he has returned. Thus, Brilliant Minds season 1 ended with another surprise revelation related to Oliver's father that needs to be addressed in a potential season 2.

Wolf Needs To Figure Out What's Wrong With His Father

The emotional fallout from Oliver learning that his father is alive is strong drama, but the final moments of the episode set up an intriguing and powerful mystery when the elder Wolf reveals that he has a serious illness that specialists around the world have been unable to treat. This cliffhanger was made stronger by the vagueness of this reveal; Noah Wolf doesn't confirm any details, saying only that "something strange" is going on with him, and he wants his son to try to figure out what it is and how to treat it.

If specialists around the world can't identify or treat this illness, it will be a medical challenge that Oliver both can't resist and needs to solve immediately.

This storyline sets up several challenges for Oliver. He has mixed feelings about his father after Noah's abandonment of him and insistence that Oliver believed he was dead. Yet at the same time, he likely won't want to lose him again so soon after learning Noah is alive. Additionally, if specialists around the world can't identify or treat this illness, it will be a medical challenge that Oliver both can't resist and needs to solve immediately.

The plot premise is powerful enough on its own, but recruiting stage and screen legend Mandy Patinkin — best known to television audiences as Criminal Minds' Jason Gideon — makes it even more attractive. Patinkin is a brilliant actor with a large following who will tune in specifically because he is involved with the show. Additionally, his inclusion offers a nostalgia factor for those who enjoyed his first television role as Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in Chicago Hope in 1996 and who are potentially eager to compare his current doctor character to the one he previously played.

Series Creator Michael Grassi Has Big Plans For This Story

Michael Grassi had Patinkin in mind when he created Noah's backstory and planned his return; Grassi also has several plans for this storyline (via TVLine). Grassi points out that Noah and Oliver have "a lot [...] to work out" because of Noah's decision to fake his death. It wouldn't be realistic for that conflict to disappear because Noah is ill, although the possibility that he might actually die will probably add to Oliver's burden. While Grassi doesn't say so, it's also possible that Oliver will initially doubt Noah's claims about his illness since he has no reason to trust him.

Another interesting idea that Grassi brings up is that Noah could take a job at the hospital. This would put Oliver in constant professional contact with both his parents while attempting to find out what is wrong with his father. This idea might also force Oliver's team to interact with his father, and it would be fascinating to see how each of the interns reacts to Noah, especially Van (Alex MacNicoll), whose Mirror Touch Syndrome might present challenges when it comes to Noah.

Brilliant Minds' Critical Acclaim May Not Be Enough To Save It

Brilliant Minds holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has received critical acclaim for its diverse and accurate representation, particularly, of various types of neurodivergence. The series airs in the time slot that ABC used to air The Good Doctor in, and audiences who enjoyed that series because of its attention to autism may be interested in this one despite it being on a different channel. However, the ratings are a concern for NBC, as Brilliant Minds' initially high numbers of 3.9 million views has gone down steadily since the premiere (via TV Series Finale).

Sadly, the ratings and viewership are a significant hurdle to a second season, as declining ratings suggest the audience is losing interest. NBC also has Chicago Med, and may feel it doesn't need a second medical series if people aren't enthusiastic enough to tune in every week. These factors put the freshman medical drama at risk of consisting only of the 13 Brilliant Minds episodes from this season. However, the EP's detailed plans for season 2 suggest he has reason for optimism regardless and that the stories begun in the finale will not be left unfinished.
