Brilliant Minds Season 2 Gets Detailed & Optimistic Update From EP
This article includes major Brilliant Minds spoilers.
Brilliant Minds creator and executive producer Michael Grassi shares his detailed hopes for season 2. A medical drama, based on the neurologist Oliver Sacks and his non-fiction books, Brilliant Minds debuted on NBC in September. It stars Star Trek alum Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, spotlighting his work with a team as they use unconventional methods to help treat their patients. The cast of Brilliant Mindsalso includes Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, and Teddy Sears, with Donna Murphy and Mandy Patinkin in recurring roles.
In an interview with TheWrap, Grassi breaks down the season 1 finale and gives an update on the drama's future. Grassi, who also serves as showrunner, was asked about a renewal. He responds that he hasn't heard anything about season 2 yet but remains hopeful that the series will return.
Not yet, but our fingers dare firmly crossed. We all love the show so much, and we love making the show, and we just think it’s such an important message and conversation to continue putting out there and continuing destigmatizing mental illness, which is what Oliver Sacks, who the show is inspired by, dedicated his life to. It’s a show that’s also sort of grounded in a lot of hope, and we want to continue sharing those those stories.
In the quote below, the executive producer also discusses some of the storylines he'd like to see if the medical drama does get a renewal:
There’s so much to unpack — Obviously, there’s Wolf and dad, but there’s so much more, and I would say many more medical mysteries and suspense, and a lot more of Oliver’s unique approach to medicine that feels like it really sets us apart.
What Brilliant Minds Season 2 Would Mean For The Series
There's A Big Twist
The closing episode of Brilliant Minds season 1, which is directed by DeMane Davis and written by Grassi, has a big reveal. Quinto's character believes that his dad is dead, obviously being shaped by such a significant loss. But the finale reveals that Dr. Wolf's dad, Noah (Patinkin), is alive and that his mom, Muriel (Murphy), has been lying to him. As indicated by Grassi's comments, this would be a massive thread for season 2 to pick up on. That's especially true since Noah needs his son's help.
However, there were also developments for the rest of Dr. Wolf's Bronx General team, who went through their own ordeals. However, the threat to one of Dr. Wolf's team ultimately brought them closer in the finale, teasing friendships and romances to come. And although there's no official word on a renewal yet, signs are positive that it could happen.
Our Take On Brilliant Minds' Renewal Chances
The Show Has Performed Strongly In The Ratings
The medical dramahas drawn an average of 4.9 million viewers per episode, getting a 0.38 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, according to TVLine. That represents an increase of 29% in the overall audience while the demo has remained steady. The show may not be a monster breakout hit like the Matlock reboot or High Potential, it has done well enough that Brilliant Minds season 2 should at least be in contention.
