Buffy the Vampire Slayer Is Being Revived, And We Know Who Its Villain Should Be
Buffy the Vampire Slayer had some of the best villains on TV while it was aring. Referred to as the Big Bads, the villains were fantastic every season; from Angelus to the Mayor, each one was instantly memorable. With a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival on the horizon, there's one Big Bad who deserves to take center stage.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended after six years on television and seven seasons. Each season had a different villain who had a different goal, and it seemed that good finally prevailed once and for all after the season seven episode "Chosen," when the First Evil was banished from Earth. But Buffy's story didn't end there.
The storyline continued for years in the comics, and one of the villains of season eight was Twilight, who appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight #6 by Brian K. Vaughan and Andy Owens. While Twilight never made it to the live-action series, he is a character fans have seen before, even if they've only watched the TV show.
Buffy's Comic-Book Enemy Twilight Was Revealed to Be a Shocking Character
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight #6 by Brian K. Vaughan, Andy Owens, Dave Stewart, Richard Starkings, and Jimmy Betancourt
At its core, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a Gothic teenage drama. There can't be teenage drama without seriously steamy love interests - including the tragic romance between Angel and Buffy. While the fact that Buffy is a vampire slayer and Angel is a vampire should be tragic enough, there is even more to their doomed romance. Angel was one of the most vicious vampires alive when he was Angelus, but that time in his unlife came to an end when he was cursed with a soul. He tried to be a hero from that point on, even striking up a romance with Buffy.
Part of the stipulation of Angel's curse is that he will lose his soul if he ever experiences a moment of true happiness. This fat unfortunately comes to pass during season two, when Buffy and Angel finally give into their passion and end up sleeping together, instantly turning Angel back into Angelus and transforming him into a horrific monster who wants nothing more than to torture Buffy and slaughter her along with all her friends. Angel became the primary antagonist of season two, but it's not the only time that Angel has played the role of a villain in a Buffy story.
Angel Has Been Buffy's Biggest Villain More Than Once
Including Twilight Would Be the Perfect Twist
After the end of season seven, Buffy has Willow cast a magical spell that activates every slayer on Earth. Instead of there only being one, every potential slayer is now an active slayer. It changed the world, and unfortunately played into the Twilight Prophecy. This prophecy came to a head when Buffy's new slayer organization came under attack by a mysterious and deeply powerful man known as Twilight. Even more concerning was the fact that Twilight seemed to know Buffy on a personal and intimate level. It's later revealed that Twilight is none other than Angel.
This Twilight entity manages to manipulate, and at one point, even outright possess Angel to force him to act as its avatar on Earth.
It turns out that Twilight is an ancient god who has existed since the start of the universe. The Twilight Prophecy says that when a slayer changes the world, Twilight will be able to enter Earth and create a new reality. This Twilight entity manages to manipulate and, at one point, even outright possess Angel to force him to act as its avatar on Earth. While Angel initially thought he was playing the villain for the betterment of the world, his actions led to the death of two hundred and six slayers, which also resulted in the end of the era of magic.
Twilight Would Be the Perfect Villain for a Buffy Revival
Classic Buffy Characters in New Plots
It's recently been announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be getting a TV revival, and while that's fantastic news for most fans, it also opens up a lot of questions, including how the vampire characters such as Angel and Spike are going to be handled. It would be frankly bizarre if they weren't included, but it would also be difficult to ignore the fact that the two characters who aren't supposed to age are visibly twenty years older than when fans last saw them. But the Twilight twist offers at least a partial solution to this problem.
Being possessed by a god older than the universe can't be good for one's complexion. The revival simply can't exclude Angel, even as a passing return. One of the ways his return could be handled is by adapting the Twilight arc from the comics. A simple explanation for Angel's aging could be the effects of having a god possessing his body. It's an incredibly simple solution but one that would absolutely work. The alternative is to simply not include Angel, which wouldn't be good for fans. While information on the revival is scarce, Twilight would be the perfect villain for the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show.
