Chainsaw Man Knows Loss, But a Viral Theory Suggests Makima Is Gearing Up For a Comeback

Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man chapter #188Chainsaw Man's most recent chapters have given way to several theories about the potential comebacks of certain characters. Pochita, after feasting on several devils during his sushi shop rampage, is now making the unluckiest protagonist in shōnen, Denji, go through the process of throwing them up. The series has kept the titular devil's powers largely ambiguous, establishing that he can erase any devil that he eats. And now, for the first time, the audience has been given the privilege of seeing what happens when he throws them up.

Chapter #188 begins with a foot bursting through Denji's mouth, before the mysterious and smug Yoshida is birthed back into existence from the depths of Chainsaw Man's stomach. Part Two's original main trio has been reformed, and together, Asa, Denji, and Yoshida must think up a plan to escape from the Aging Devil's world. Just before the chapter ends, though, Yoshida kindly asks if he can shove his hand down Denji's throat. The possibilities of who or what he's trying to pull out are endless, but a new popular theory suggests he might be fishing for Makima.

A Wild New Theory Points to a Return From Makima

The Control Devil Might Have Been in Pochita's Stomach All Along

There is little more useless than trying to predict the events of Chainsaw Man. Author Tatsuki Fujimoto's writing style makes it near impossible for his audience to know where he'll take his masterpiece of a story next, which makes theorizing all the more fun for his community. The most popular prediction floating around is that Yoshida will try to retrieve his Octopus Devil from Pochita, but the more fun theory points toward a possible return of one of the most popular villains in current anime, Makima.

Part One famously concluded with Denji cooking Makima's body into a variety of dishes, before eating every part of her until nothing was left. Fujimoto, whether on purpose or for a lack of a will to explain, left the finer details of why exactly this approach to defeating the Control Devil worked. If he wanted to write that she's been stuck in Chainsaw Man's stomach this entire time, he could. There may be no better time for Makima's return, as well.

A Makima Return Could Work, Despite How Wild a Twist It Would Be

Nayuta's Absence Has Opened a Spot For Another Control Devil

Given the recent confirmation that the disembodied head on the sushi belt was Nayuta all along, there is a distinct lack of a Control Devil in the story at this point. Fujimoto could subvert his readers' expectations by returning her, not as Nayuta, but as her original Makima self. The potential consequences of her return to the story are likely too major to write cohesively, but Fujimoto has done wilder things before. There is no doubt, however, that if Makima were to return, she would be a far greater threat than any Part Two devil thus far.

The original Control Devil was never much of a fan of Denji, and if she were to return to the story following her defeat, it's unlikely she would enjoy him any more now. Though if her return tampers with the nature of death enough to annoy a certain Death Devil, causing it to come to Earth, she would be a handy weapon to have along in a fight.

Chainsaw Man's most recent chapters may be the strangest in the entire series, but Tatsuki Fujimoto is making them work in a way only he can. As the trio assess their situation in Aging's world, Pochita is still fighting the devil elsewhere in reality, and future chapters may switch focus back to Chainsaw Man's brutal battle. If Makima truly does return to the series, it will be the largest twist in the entire story. Until it is revealed who will be retrieved from Denji's mouth, fans can enjoy art by X user namako14s, depicting the Control Devil's rebirth.
