Chelsea's Bad Omens In The White Lotus Season 3 Have To Be A Red Herring, Right?

Warning! This article contains spoilers for The White Lotus season 3, episode 3.

Chelsea is brushing shoulders with death regularly in The White Lotus season 3 thus far, but I am convinced her bad omens can be nothing but a red herring. As a Brit who loves Sex Education, I was delighted to discover Aimee Lou Wood was part of The White Lotus season 3's cast. Moreover, I was happy to know that Wood's character, Chelsea, is one of the more endearing in the show, so much so that I am hoping she does not end up as The White Lotus season 3's unfortunate victim.

Regardless of any worries, Chelsea's arc has been an intriguing one to discover in The White Lotus season 3's three episodes thus far. The White Lotus season 3, episode 2's ending hinted that Rick was set to abandon Chelsea for Bangkok, yet episode 3 first gave them a detour to a local town near the titular hotel. There, Chelsea suffered yet another close call in the form of a group of snakes Rick set free in The White Lotus. This is only the latest bad omen Chelsea has faced so far this season, but I am convinced they must be red herrings, right?

In The White Lotus season 3, episode 3, Chelsea's latest "near-death experience" came after she was bitten by a snake. The snake was venomous, and she had to be rushed to the hospital before she succumbed to the poison. This bad experience came only one episode after she was in the White Lotus' gift shop with her new friend Chloe - the girlfriend of the returning Greg, or "Gary" - when the store got robbed at gunpoint by thieves entering the hotel. Clearly, Chelsea is not one to suffer from good luck recently.

Greg's surprising return in The White Lotus season 3 raises all sorts of questions after he should be in prison for trying to kill Tanya in season 2.

In The White Lotus season 3, episode 3's latter half, Chloe remarks on how Chelsea continues to tempt fate. Chloe almost suggests that Chelsea should actively avoid anything too dangerous after she suffered through the robbery and the deadly snake bite. Although this could simply be an innocuous, almost humorous comment from Chloe, it plants the seed in audiences' minds that Chelsea will continue to face more danger in the coming episodes. After all, bad luck comes in threes, potentially hinting at Chelsea facing another close call with death.

As I have alluded to, The White Lotus is only further stoking our expectations as audience members. Watching the show and witnessing Chelsea in these situations before Chloe remarks she could face another, we are only going to expect more to happen to Chelsea. Evidently, The White Lotus' writing is having the intended effect; audiences are now worried that something terrible is going to happen to her. Even the tease of a trip on Gary’s boat is now worrying, especially after what has been going wrong for Chelsea during her trip to Thailand up to now.

Chelsea's multiple brushes with death so early into The White Lotus season 3's eight-episode story seem too obvious to come to anything meaningful...

However, this exact strategy is why I am convinced Chelsea's experiences are simply a red herring. As the opening scene of The White Lotus season 3 made clear, a bigger tragedy is going to befall the hotel before the show concludes. In setting up Chelsea's apparent demise, the show is obscuring the potential death of another character that could prove even more shocking and tragic. Who that character is remains to be seen, but Chelsea's multiple brushes with death so early into The White Lotus season 3's eight-episode story seem too obvious to come to anything meaningful.

Could Chelsea Be The White Lotus Season 3's Opening Scene Victim?

Who Is The Unfortunate Dead Body From Episode 1's Opening?

With all of this in mind, the burning question is whether the victim from The White Lotus season 3's opening scene could be Chelsea. Admittedly, after the elements I have just explored, I think this is unlikely. If Chelsea had been primed to die, it is unlikely the show would be so blatant in giving her brushes with death as early as it had. That said, this theory could be proven wrong by Chelsea experiencing relative safety for the next few episodes, only to pull the rug out and kill her near the end of the show.

For this reason, it is unlikely, but not impossible, that Chelsea is the main victim of The White Lotus season 3. Nonetheless, there are still more likely candidates. One such candidate is Belinda, given that she is one of the few recurring characters in the show from season 1 and that her son, Zion, is the one who finds the body.

All of this points to Belinda being the most heartwrenching victim of The White Lotus season 3. Still, Chelsea could prove to be the victim and suffer her third, delayed, final brush with death. Either that or her close calls to date have been a way of throwing audiences off the scent of the real tragedy lurking beneath the show’s many secretive characters and their misdeeds.
