Controversial Emilia Pérez Star Responds To Conan O'Brien's Oscars Joke On Social Media

Emilia Pérez actor Karla Sofía Gascón responds to Conan O'Brien's joke about her at the Oscars. Gascón made Oscars history when she became the first openly transgender woman nominated for an acting Oscar for her titular role in the 13-time Oscar nominee Emilia Pérez. The movie was once considered a frontrunner in the Oscar race, until problematic social media posts from Gascón's past circulated online, ruining her campaign. In the end, Emilia Pérez only ended up taking home two Oscars, for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress.

Speaking out on Instagram, Gascón reacts to O'Brien's jokes. Gascón began by thanking the Academy for her nomination for Best Actress and invitation to the gala. She then goes on to reference the host, and dished his own joke back to him, writing "very entertaining and fun, especially its fabulous presenter Jimmy Kimmel, he is fantastic, every day he looks more like the great Conan O’Brien." The full English translation of Gascón's text can be found below:

Thanks to the members of [The Academy] for the nomination as best leading actress, for the invitation to the gala; I really liked it, very entertaining and fun, especially its fabulous presenter Jimmy Kimmel, he is fantastic, every day he looks more like the great Conan O’Brien. I loved hugging so many friends and colleagues on this return. Congratulations to all the winners, especially [Zoe Saldaña], [Camille Dalmais] and [Clement Ducol].

Thank you [Netflix], [Why Not Productions], and [Jacques Audiard]. Thank you Emilia Pérez for having taught me so many things.

What This Means For The Oscars & Gascón

Gascón Doesn't Actually Address The Joke's Content

Gascón's latest post online is a reference to a joke that O'Brien made about her during his opening monologue at the Oscars. In the bit, O'Brien said "Little fact for you, Anora uses the F-word 479 times. That’s more than the record set by Karla Sofia Gascon’s publicist...Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars tonight, my name is Jimmy Kimmel." Gascón references O'Brien's joking request in her online response, speaking about the "fabulous presenter Jimmy Kimmel."

Why Emilia Pérez Only Won Two Oscars Despite Having 13 Nominations (It's A New Record Low)

Emilia Pérez had an impressive number of Oscar nominations, but the movie's journey from potential Oscar darling to underperformer proved dramatic.

Gascón still did not fully address the content of her joke in this commentary. In the audience Sunday night, the actor kept her composure after the joke was made, smiling kindly to the camera. In her post, she does not express offense but rather, focuses on her gratitude for being included in the ceremony at all. She also made sure to congratulate her fellow Emilia Pérez nominees that did win.

Our Take On Gascón's Oscar Response

Gascón Has A Dicey Career Future

Gascón already attempted to apologize for the hurt she caused with her past Tweets, and she makes no attempt to repeat the apology here. It is probably wise to take the high road and lean into the more lighthearted piece of the joke, as her apology was considered largely ineffective, and the future of her acting career after Emilia Pérez is still very much in jeopardy. In the end, Emilia Pérez will go down in history as one of the most disastrous falls from glory in Oscar history, with its campaign devolving after just a few weeks.
