Councilwoman Drops "Stupid Hiker" Law

A Phoenix lawmaker decided not to pursue a measure charging some hikers for emergency rescue.

Phoenix Councilwoman Thelda Williams has officially backed off her idea to charge “stupid hikers”–people who need emergency help because of their own negligence–for the cost of their rescues. She asked staff to investigate the idea, but dropped it after she said they convinced her that enough hikers need “legitimate” rescue.
