CSI: Vegas Season 4 Scrapped Story Explained (Including Season 3's Set Up)
CSI: Vegas is a revival of the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation series, which ran for 15 seasons, highlighting the importance of forensic analysis in a police procedural. Maxine "Max" Roby leads CSI: Vegas as the head of the Las Vegas crime lab with a new crew of CSI investigators with the aid of medical examiners and homicide detectives. Franchise CSI characters Gil Grissom, Catherine Willows, Sara Sidle, and Jim Brass each return in a certain capacity.
During its three-season run from 2021 to 2024, CSI: Vegas tackled various murder cases and personal dilemmas, including the demotion of lead investigator Joshua "Josh" Folsom for his quest to avenge his mother's murder. In CSI: Vegas' unplanned series finale, Max is abducted by culprits involved in a lab explosion and synthetic DNA. Despite being a solid ratings performer, CSI: Vegas was canceled after the season three finale due toa lack of room in CBS' schedule the following season, leaving the CSI show open-ended.
CSI: Vegas Season 3 Finale Reportedly Featured A Scene That Sets Up Its Next Villain
The Show's Next Villain Could've Been The Most Terrifying
While the season 3 finale focused on Catherine Willows and the CSI team trying to search for their leader, Max, and her abductors, a brief scene featured in press screenings teased a new villain going after unhoused individuals. However, this supposed killer was never previewed in the unplanned series finale, thus scrapping that potential storyline for a fourth season. This would have been an intriguing case for the CSI team because, according to the clip in the TV promos, the villain resembles the killer from I Know What You Did Last Summer.

CSI Vegas: Every Original Character Who Returned For The Revival
CSI is back, with CBS set to revive its flagship CSI series as CSI: Vegas. These are the original characters that are set to return for the new show.
As shown in the season 3 finale promo, the anonymous antagonist is wearing hooded clothing resembling a raincoat and is holding a hook or hand scythe. Only the villain's shadow is shown in a lit-up tent outdoors with a hook raised up. Many of the cases on the show have dealt with murders that occur in extravagant Las Vegas venues, including hotels, casinos, banquets, and festivals. However, this scrapped season 4 storyline would've focused on homeless individuals being targeted by a villain who looks like he came out of a horror feature.
What CSI: Vegas' Story Could Have Been
The CSI Revival Left Many Storylines Up In The Air
The scrapped tease for season 4 involving an unknown villain going after Las Vegas' homeless population had the potential to be the show's darkest storyline after the CSI team had faced numerous murderers and criminals. This antagonist could've been a shadowy figure who's challenging to track down and leaves minimal forensic evidence for the CSI team to work with. The villain also may have had the opportunity to stalk each CSI member, placing the team in more danger than ever before.
Apart from this abandoned plot with an anonymous killer, several CSI characters, including the fresh faces of the show, had storylines and relationships that were just getting started. Towards the end of the season 3 finale, it is revealed that Max has a boyfriend named Dean. This revelation would've been crucial in season 4 because the show had already established Max as a diligent investigator and a strong leader of the CSI team. Max's love life would be a new side of the protagonist that spectators haven't seen yet.
CSI: Vegas Character | CSI: Vegas Actor | Seasons |
---|---|---|
Maxine "Max" Roby | Paula Newsome | 1-3 |
Joshua "Josh" Folsom | Matt Lauria | 1-3 |
Ahalya "Allie" Rajan | Mandeep Dhillon | 1-3 |
Sara Sidle | Jorja Fox | 1 |
Gil Grissom | William Petersen | 1 |
Catherine Willows | Marg Helgenberger | 2-3 |
Penelope "Penny" Gill | Sarah Gillman | Recurring |
Jack Nikolayevich | Joel Johnstone | 2-3 |
Jim Brass | Paul Guilfoyle | 1 |
Another intriguing plotline involves Max reinstating Folsom's Level 3 CSI status after he was investigated for going after the murderers responsible for killing Folsom's mother. Folsom also started developing chemistry with fellow investigator Ahalya "Allie" Rajan, who was recently promoted to Level 3 and has an intriguing backstory as an immigrant pursuing her dreams of working in Vegas. CSI: Vegas' potential love story between Folsom and Allie could've potentially gone further, along with their casework in season 4. CSI member Penelope "Penny" Gill and assistant medical examiner Jack Nikolayevich also plan a marriage that won't be shown on-screen.
Was CSI: Vegas' Ending Satisfying?
A Clear But Open-Ended Conclusion For The CSI Revival
The ending of CSI: Vegas brings the show to a reasonable conclusion because Max is able to fight back and take down her abductors with the help of Catherine and the CSI team. The case with the villain Gray Suit and his Saudi spies involved an intriguing and mischievous plot surrounding a lab explosion and the use of synthetic DNA to expose sensitive information regarding the CSI unit. However, despite a satisfying end to the show, it is still considered abrupt because the new CSI characters were beginning to develop their relationships and stature as CSI investigators.
Now that the new characters in Vegas have gained traction by working on challenging cases and establishing their own personal dilemmas, the show's cancelation takes away the opportunity to pursue the lives of these investigators further.
CSI: Vegas initially relied on original CSI characters like Grissom and Sara when the show premiered because they were the ones who started the foreground of the CSI franchise. Now that the new characters in Vegas have gained traction by working on challenging cases and establishing their own personal dilemmas, the show's cancelation takes away the opportunity to pursue the lives of these investigators further. Perhaps another streaming service like Paramount Plus (which is associated with CBS) could bring CSI: Vegas back in order to continue this popular franchise.
