D&D Publisher Teams With Space Marine 2 Publisher On New AAA Video Game

Dungeons & Dragons publisher Hasbro is teaming up with Saber Interactive to make a new video game featuring one of their iconic franchises. Over the past couple of years, Hasbro has looked to build on its iconic toy franchises by expanding into video games.

Their most successful ventures so far have been Baldur's Gate 3and Monopoly Go, both of which were partnerships with outside video game companies. Although Hasbro is also gearing up their in-house game publishers, Hasbro is also teaming up with one of last year's biggest success stories for a new video game.

During an earnings call last week, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks revealed that the company was teaming up with Saber Interactive to make a new AAA title using one of Hasbro's "tentpole" IPs. The game will feature both single-player action and "amazing multiplayer" and Saber's Swarm tech, which brought the Tyranids to life in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. According to Cocks, the game will be made by the same team that developed Space Marine 2. At the time of writing, no timeline has been given for the game's release.

Is Saber Interactive Making A D&D Video Game?

Space Marine 2 Developer Could Be Working On One Of Several Iconic Franchises

While Hasbro owns dozens of IPs, there are really only a few franchises that make sense for a "Swarm tech"-style game. The first, of course, is Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro executives have said multiple times that they have big plans for D&D's future in video games, and the idea of fighting hordes of enemies fits well with D&D's general high fantasy themes. Goblins, demons, devils, kobolds, and countless other monsters from D&D would fit well with a multiplayer game that involves defeating waves of enemies.

Dungeons & Dragons has revealed the cover art for Dragon Delves, its new dragon-themed anthology featuring all of D&D's most iconic dragons.

Two other possibilities are GI JOE and Transformers, which have struggled to build up any kind of consistent video game presence. While Hasbro is developing an AAA Snake-Eyes video game via an in-house studio, there hasn't been a new Transformers video game in years. GI JOE could match well with the general gameplay style of Space Marine 2, while Transformers has similar sci-fi aesthetics. Either would easily be a good fit for Saber Interactive's swarm-style game.

Our Take: Saber Interactive And Habsro Are An Intriguing Pair

We Want To See Dungeons & Dragons' Blood War As A Video Game

Zariel, Archduke of Hell, from Neverwinter: Avernus

It'll take years before we see what Saber Interactive is cooking, but this new game is really intriguing. If it's a D&D game, Hasbro likely has another big hit on its hands, especially if they explore some of the weirder corners of the D&D multiverse.

Other Hasbro IPs could also benefit from the boost in exposure, especially as many of Hasbro's biggest IPs haven't translated well into video game success. Personally, I'm itching for Saber Interactive to take on Dungeons & Dragons' Blood War, a big never-ending battle between demons and devils. Either way - this is one big project to look forward to.
