Daredevil Is Reinventing Foggy Nelson Ahead of His MCU Return With Some New Powers

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Daredevil #18!Daredevilis about to make his epic MCU comeback with the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, and he’s bringing his friends along with him. All the characters who were introduced in the original Netflix Daredevil series (which was only loosely connected to the MCU at the time), including the likes of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, are coming back in Daredevil: Born Again. And now, ahead of that MCU series, Marvel Comics has decided to reinvent Foggy Nelson in an interesting way: by giving him superpowers.

In a preview for Daredevil #18 by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, Matt Murdock is back in court for the first time in some time, as he is slowly returning to his old life after dying and being resurrected as a priest. And joining him in court (albeit on the other side of the bench) is none other than his old legal partner, Foggy Nelson. Except, there’s something different about Foggy.

One of Foggy Nelson’s eyes is glowing yellow, and his skin has taken on a sickly golden hue. While this striking redesign may take readers by surprise when they first see it in the pages of this preview, it doesn’t take long for Matt to reveal exactly why Foggy looks like this: he’s been possessed by a devil, Pride.

Daredevil’s Foggy Nelson Has Been Possessed by the Devil Pride

Matt Murdock’s Best Friend Just Became a Dangerous Enemy (Like So Many Others)

Outside the courtroom in this current Daredevil continuity, Matt Murdock has committed himself to more than just stopping criminals as Daredevil, but actually doing some good in the city as Matt Murdock. In that effort, Matt opened a Youth Home for orphaned children. Unfortunately, the Youth Home is under attack by the devils that clung to Matt’s soul after he died and came back to life: the Seven Deadly Sins.

When Daredevil sacrificed his life so that his soul could travel to hell and destroy the Beast (which was worshiped by the Hand) once and for all, his soul became fractured and infected with the Seven Deadly Sins, which - upon returning to the mortal world with Matt - went on to possess those closest to him. Since returning from the dead, Daredevil has been able to exercise these devils, but two still remain: Wrath and Pride. And now, Pride has its grip on Foggy, transforming him into a dangerous enemy.

Daredevil’s Fight with Foggy Nelson will Be Done Not on the Streets, but In the Courtroom

Daredevil vs Pride Will Be Matt Murdock’s Most Unique Battle Yet

Normally, when handling super-villains (including and especially the other Seven Deadly Sins), Matt Murdock would take them down by fighting them in the streets as Daredevil. However, this battle against the Pride-possessed Foggy Nelson promises to be something different. Foggy (Pride) is threatening to shut Matt’s Youth Home down with the hammer of the law, so Matt has to beat him in court to keep his Youth Home going. Plus, if Matt does win, Pride promises to tell Daredevil where Wrath is, meaning the last two of the Seven Deadly Sins will finally be handled.

Frank Miller’s Daredevil run remains a defining work in the comic industry. Miller takes everything away from Matt Murdock, leaving a husk of a man.

This issue is going to be a lot of fun for Daredevil fans to read, especially those who enjoy the courtroom drama aspect of the series. Not only that, but this issue also features Foggy Nelson with devil-induced superpowers right before he’s going to make his official MCU debut, which could mean big things for his live-action character moving forward in MCU’s Daredevil series.

Daredevil #18 by Marvel Comics is available February 19, 2025.
