Last week, Denver Public Schools became the latest (and largest) district to ban field trips to Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, which will open to visitors this summer. The districts (which include Boulder Valley, St. Vrain, and Jefferson County) cite concerns about toxic waste and radiation; a Superfund site still exists in the refuge. But others say testing has proved the area is safe and that the bans will keep kids from enjoying an urban wildlife escape.
