Dexter & Nicky’s Original Sin Season 1 Finale Scene Tragically Flips Harry Morgan’s Worst Mistake

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 10.Dexter (Patrick Gibson) saved Nicky Spencer from drowning at his father's hand in the finale of Dexter: Original Sin season 1, and the scene was a perfect parallel to Harry Morgan's (Christian Slater) greatest tragedy. After Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey) was revealed as the kidnapper, Dexter made it his mission to prove Spencer's guilt. As he investigated, Dexter learned that Nicky, Spencer's son, was still alive, and he decided to trick Spencer into leading him to Nicky in Original Sin episode 9. By the ending of Original Sin season 1, Dexter had finally tracked the boy down.

Spencer tried to drown Nicky at the bottom of a cargo ship, but Dexter was able to save him. It foiled Spencer's plan that he had been carrying out all season long, but Dexter's actions also served as a callback to Harry's story from the premiere of Original Sin season 1. In fact, Dexter didn't just bring Original Sin full circle, he also justified the Code of Harry, and finally made up for one of his adoptive father's greatest mistakes.

Dexter Successfully Saves Nicky From Drowning While Harry Failed To Save Junior

Though Harry Thought He Created A Monster, Dexter Succeeded In Saving A Child Where Harry Failed

When Dexter successfully saved Nicky from drowning, he was a perfect parallel to Harry Morgan earlier in the season. In one of Harry's flashbacks, Original Sin revealed he had a son named Junior, and that Junior died from drowning in the family pool while Harry wasn't looking. Aside from the broad similarities of Dexter saving a drowning child and Harry not being able to, there were other parallels between them. Both Harry and Dexter approached Nicky and Junior's drownings in the same way by diving into the water without a moment's hesitation, and they both even performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while still underwater.

Losing Junior was obviously a massive tragedy for Harry and his wife, Doris (Jasper Lewis), and he likely blamed himself for not watching more closely. When Dexter saved Nicky from drowning, however, he basically succeeded where Harry failed with Junior. In a way, Dexter even "made up for" Harry's mistake, since Harry raised Dexter well enough to save Nicky's life. Dexter's bravery and success in saving Nicky's life probably meant much more to Harry than he let on in the finale of Original Sin season 1.

Spencer Trying To Kill Nicky By Drowning Him Makes Him Even More Evil After Harry's Tragedy

Spencer Knew How Junior Died & How Nicky's Drowning Death Would Have Affected Harry

The fact that Aaron Spencer was planning to drown Nicky the entire time he had him doesn't just highlight Dexter's goodness, it also highlights just how evil Spencer was. Spencer knew Harry for years, and he indirectly mentioned that he knew how Junior had died from drowning. Spencer's decision to drown Nicky would have added just a bit more cruelty for Harry, as he would have made connections between Nicky and Junior Morgan. Killing a child in any way is obviously abhorrent, but the fact that Spencer chose the one method that would have hurt Harry the most makes him even more vile in Dexter: Original Sin.
