Dexter Never Got High Or Drunk In The Original Series (Unlike Most Other Major Characters)
Dexter chooses sobriety to maintain control of his Dark Passenger
In the Dexter original series, several characters such as Deb, Batista, and Quinn get high or drunk at various times, but never Dexter. He'll drink occasionally, but he's always in control of himself, a point that he reiterates to Deb in Dexter: Original Sin. This just goes to show how much more difficult it became for him to control his Dark Passenger as he got older and kept killing since he couldn't risk losing that control with drugs or alcohol.
Dexter's eating habits in the original series were even more prevalent during his early killing days in Original Sin, which is how he ended up getting very high on Deb's weed brownies in the first place. This allowed him to be more open and unserious with Deb in a way that she had never seen before, which led to the two of them hanging out for the first time like true siblings, even though they technically weren't. At the start of Original Sin, Deb is humiliated for bringing Dexter to a party. Five episodes later, the close connection between Deb and Dexter, which is the core of the original series, starts to form.
Dexter Accidentally Getting High In Original Sin Season 1 Episode 5 Reveals The Real Start Of His Bond With Deb
It's the first time Deb and Dexter start hanging like they do in the original series
While Dexter getting high on weed brownies was not on many people's Original Sin bingo cards, it provides some context as to why Dexter never indulged in drugs or alcohol as an adult, living in Miami of all places. Even several of his police officer coworkers, especially Deb, find ways to take the edge off, but Dexter never risks it, knowing the consequences would be too great. That moment in Dexter: Original Sin episode 5 between Deb and Dexter is really the first time they act like their characters from the original series, which is when they've already been close for years.
