Dexter: Original Sin Revives The Most Tired Debra Morgan Trend From The Original Series
WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 6.
The Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin repeats a familiar yet tired Deb trend of the original series. Developed by New Blood creator Clyde Phillips, the prequel series chronicles a post-college Dexter as he embraces his "dark passenger"through the guidance and teachings of his adopted father, Harry. Dexter implements Harry's code to satisfy his violent urges while making sure never to get caught. New episodes of Dexter: Original Sin release every Friday exclusively on Paramount+, except for a hiatus on January 17, 2024.
After Michael C. Hall reprised his iconic role as the charismatic vigilante serial killer in 2021's Dexter: New Blood, he returns as Dexter's inner voice and narrator in the prequel series. The series takes place in Miami in 1991 as Dexter begins his career at Miami Metro PD. Dexter: Original Sin has already covered a few anticipated kills that were already established in Dexter's lore. Another upcoming Dexter series, Dexter: Resurrection, is expected to be released in the summer of 2025 with Hall also slated to return.
Original Sin Continues Dexter's Trend Of Giving Deb Awful Boyfriends
Gio seems great on the surface but something is probably up with him
Deb had a horrible track record with her romantic relationships in the original show. From Rudy Cooper, better known as The Ice Truck Killer Brian Moser, to Andrew Briggs and Sean the Mechanic, who turned out to be married, Deb was fated to have bad and messy relationships. Even though Frank Lundy was a really great guy, it was an odd relationship for her that the people around her really didn't support due to the age difference. Gio now also has a lot of red flags around him in Original Sin even though he sticks up and shows up for Deb multiple times. The age gap – Gio a fully-grown adult while Deb is in high school – is also quite shady.
Deb's best relationship was arguably the on-an-off dynamic with Joey Quinn, who was at the hospital when she died in the Dexter original series finale. While they weren't perfect, they understood one another and could have been the best shot at Deb having a somewhat stable relationship. Of course, there is her bizarre romantic interest in Dexter which was introduced in the later seasons of the series and is best left unacknowledged. If anything, it demonstrated how confused Deb was about love and relationships.
Deb's Story Is Only Going To Get More Upsetting Throughout Dexter: Original Sin
Gio will likely show his true colors & Harry is expected to die
Based on Deb's track record, Gio is most likely going to turn out to be really terrible in the latter half of Dexter: Original Sin. He could even end up being the kidnapper and murderer of Jimmy Powell and Aaron Spencer's son, which would be a great twist. Gio talks about his wealthy dad frequently, which seems to make him upset. Gio's dad could also be involved in Jimmy Powell's murders along with Gio. Regardless, the veil is sure to be lifted with Gio in Dexter: Original Sin, leaving Deb to have to deal with Harry's death, which is expected to happen in the season 1 finale.
