Dexter: Resurrection Casts Neil Patrick Harris, Adding To An Impressively Stacked Collection Of Stars
Neil Patrick Harris is set for a guest-starring role in the upcoming crime drama Dexter: Resurrection. The show will serve as a spinoff of the Dexter franchise, and a direct sequel to Dexter: New Blood. Harris has been a TV stalwart since he played the lead role of Doogie Howser, M.D. from 1989 to 1993, gaining further recognition with his breakout character Barney Stinson on the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, for which he was nominated for four Primetime Emmys. Harris has branched out into more dramatic roles in recent years and will continue this trend with Dexter.
Showtime reports that Harris will join the cast of Dexter: Resurrection in the role of Lowell, joining an already stacked cast list that also includes Uma Thurman, James Remar, and Peter Dinklage. Production began in New York in January of this year, and the show is expected to drop on Showtime/Paramount+ later in 2025. Clyde Phillips will return as showrunner, and will executive produce alongside star Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns.
What This Means For Dexter: Resurrection
Harris Is A Strong Addition To An Impressive Cast
Harris is an actor with great range and depth who has shown himself to be accomplished in dramatic roles as well as comedic ones. With more intense turns in Gone Girl, The Matrix Resurrections, and It's a Sin, he is no stranger to carrying weighty scenes. This is something that will make him a key addition to the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, and he could be in line for a long-term supporting role on the show, assuming he isn't a victim.
Dexter: Resurrection is expected to pick up with the titular character (played by Hall) after he survives what appeared to be a fatal wound, which he received at the end of New Blood.
It is unclear exactly what the plot of Dexter: Resurrection will be, but there is a good chance Harris could play a prominent part, and his character Lowell could have a recurring stint on the show. With the diverse range of talent already involved in Dexter: Resurrection, it has a high chance of becoming a big success, and this could result in multiple seasons.
It is unclear how many episodes Harris has signed on for, but given his pedigree as an A-lister, he will surely have a meaty character to dig into, one that can further test his range as a dramatic actor.
Our Take On Dexter: Resurrection
The Show Will Take Things In A Fresh Direction
The unexpected success of Dexter: New Blood and the freshness of the prequel show Dexter: Original Sin has reinvigorated the franchise, or at the very least shown there are still storytelling avenues for Hall's titular serial killer to explore. The new Resurrection could further take things in an exciting new direction. A strong cast can be a good indicator of how a show might pan out, and the involvement of Harris will be a definite advantage to the creative direction of Dexter: Resurrection, as well as the cast as a whole.
