Dexter Sequel Series Filming Start Confirmed With New BTS Set Photo

Dexter: Resurrection's first set photo has been shared, confirming that filming on the sequel series is underway. Created by Clyde Phillips, the world of Dexter seemingly came to an end in 2022 with the New Blood finale, which sees Michael C. Hall's beloved serial killer dying at the hands of his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Now, there's plenty more of the franchise on the horizon, with new episodes of the Dexter: Original Sin prequel show continuing to air, and Dexter: Resurrection set to release in summer 2025.

In a now-deleted Instagram post on January 9, 2025, director Marcos Siega reveals that Dexter: Resurrection has started filming. The post, a screenshot of which comes via ComicBook.com, teases a snowy setting for the filming start and that Siega will be directing the first episode. Check out Siega's post below:

What Dexter: Resurrection's Set Photo Means For The Show

Filming Timeline, Episode Count & Story Explained

Phillips previously let slip that Dexter: Resurrection is targeting a June 2025 release, and the start of filming on January 9 fits in with this general timeline. Though more effects-heavy shows like Fallout, The Last of Us, and Stranger Things can feature well over a year between the start of filming and the actual premiere, Dexter is, by comparison, a much more traditional series that won't need months' worth of VFX work.

Though Resurrection's episode count has not yet been revealed, it's likely that it will follow in the footsteps of both New Blood and Original Sin, which both feature 10 episodes. The sequel series will seemingly be picking up after the Dexter: New Blood ending and the first moments of Original Sin, which feature Hall's serial killer dying in the snow before being brought back to life in a nearby hospital. It has now been revealed that Alcott, Angel Batista actor David Zayas, and Harry Morgan actor James Remar will all be returning in the sequel show.

It has been rumored that Dexter: Resurrection will take place mostly in New York City, suggesting Hall's character could seek out a change of scenery after revival at the hospital.

Our Take On Dexter: Resurrection's Filming Start

Why Siega's Post Got Deleted & When More Updates Could Arrive

It looks like Siega may have jumped the gun when he confirmed that Dexter: Resurrection has started filming, but now that the cat is out of the bag, it's entirely possible that more updates will follow in the coming days and weeks. Unveiling Hall's on-set return as Dexter, after all, represents an exciting marketing opportunity, and giving audiences a look at what's to come could be a great way to drum up excitement for the sequel show.

That being said, it's possible that Siega's post was deleted because the powers at be at Showtime don't want Resurrection overshadowing the well reviewed Dexter: Original Sin, which is about halfway through season 1. With the prequel show set to conclude in just over a month, mid-February could be when more about Dexter: Resurrection is revealed.
