Doctor Odyssey’s midseason return is near the horizon, but one of the medical drama’s biggest mysteries may have already been resolved. Ryan Murphy’s newest ABC hit has been celebrated for its camp factor, unique emergencies, and highly stylized aesthetic— as displayed in Doctor Odyssey’s ridiculously fun theme weeks. Joshua Jackson leads Doctor Odyssey’s esteemed cast of characters as Max Bankman, with Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale rounding out the Odyssey’s medical crew as Avery Morgan and Tristan Silva, respectively. The only thing more complicated than the cases they treat is the trio’s convoluted romantic dynamic.

Max and Tristan both harbored feelings for Avery early on in Doctor Odyssey, with Avery kissing both within the first three episodes. The love triangle grows even more complex after Max, Tristan, and Avery have a threesome in Doctor Odyssey episode 6. Though Max and Tristan quickly agree that they don’t want to be in a throuple, Avery’s feelings fluctuate for both of her suitors. In Doctor Odyssey’s midseason finale, it’s revealed that the trio have unfinished business when Avery discovers she’s pregnant, and since the three were intimate, there’s no telling who the biological father is.

Doctor Odyssey episode 9 won’t air until March 6, but promotional materials have already been released for its highly-anticipated return, along with an official synopsis that may spoil the paternity mystery. As the synopsis reveals, “Max and Avery are at a crossroads [...] as Avery faces a difficult pregnancy decision,” when Doctor Odyssey returns (via TV Line). It’s entirely possible that the synopsis is a red herring and Avery is still unsure who the biological father is, but it’s equally likely that Doctor Odyssey will amp up the conflict by revealing the paternity early to fully maximize the dramatic fallout.

Avery’s pregnancy was a major cliffhanger to leave off on, and who the biological father is has long been the number one Doctor Odyssey question left unanswered. It’s difficult to imagine that the show would simply have such a long-awaited reveal included in a synopsis a month before the episode is set to air. Max and Avery’s stalemate is likely still related to the pregnancy, but there could be several dilemmas that don’t include confirming Max is the father. However, it would be better for everyone in Doctor Odyssey if he were the biological match.

The Pregnancy Would Have Thrown Off Everything For Tristan

Finding out the father will be just as important as what Avery decides to do with her pregnancy. Max and Tristan, aside from fundamentally being very different, have wildly different perspectives on the potential child. Max has been vocal about wanting to be a father in Doctor Odyssey, but Tristan is much younger and not prepared to start a family. Granted, Avery may not be ready either. If Avery chooses to carry her pregnancy to term, Max would be the best option for a present and enthusiastic father figure, regardless of how the pregnancy impacts his and Avery’s romantic relationship.

Additionally, Tristan has finally moved on from his crush on Avery with the chef on Doctor Odyssey’s luxury cruise ship, Vivian (Laura Harrier). Tristan and Vivian make the best couple in Doctor Odyssey, but the pair could be done before even making their relationship official if Tristan got Avery pregnant. While it may be best of all if Avery and the men never find out who the father is, if there’s going to be a paternity test, everyone would be better off if Max matches. Nonetheless, paternity may not matter depending on how Avery deals with her crossroads decision.

If it turns out Max is the biological father, he’ll want a say in what happens to the pregnancy. As Tristan explained to him in Doctor Odyssey episode 8, however, his feelings on the matter do not factor into whatever decision Avery makes regarding her body. Doctor Odyssey set Avery up with an especially intricate dilemma. Avery has wanted to go to medical school for years, and the Odyssey granted her a scholarship to achieve her dream. Having a child would require Avery to sacrifice med school, and that sacrifice may be too great for her.

At first glance, one option is far less life-changing; in this situation, however, there are no simple decisions.

Nevertheless, Avery might realize she wants to have the baby. While it would grant Max’s wish to be a father, it would complicate everything. Their entire lives would change, they’d have to give up their careers on the Odyssey, and there’s no guarantee that co-parenting wouldn't ruin Max and Avery’s relationship. At first glance, one option is far less life-changing; in this situation, however, there are no simple decisions. The romances in Doctor Odyssey may be a selling point, but Avery’s independent goals must take precedence. Even if Doctor Odyssey revealed the father, Avery’s pregnancy storyline is far from finished.
