Doctor Who Season 15 Adds Slow Horses Star, RTD Teases New Character In "One Of The Darkest, Toughest Episodes"

A Slow Horses regular will make the leap from London to the Whoniverse, as Doctor Who casts the actor in one of season 15's darkest and most difficult stories. Ncuti Gatwa is set to return as the Fifteenth Doctor in the upcoming season of the beloved sci-fi series alongside Millie Gibson's companion Ruby Sunday. Doctor Who season 15 will also see the return of guest star Varada Sethu, who will play new companion Belinda Chandra.

Slow Horses regular Christopher Chung has been confirmed to join Doctor Who season 15 in an announcement by BBC. Showrunner Russell T Davies celebrated Chung's work in the Apple TV+ series and teased his role of Cassio in the season's "toughest" episode and his complicated relationship with the Time Lord.

I’m a huge fan of Slow Horses, and I was so excited to get Chris involved. He brings all of his strength and style and talent to one of the darkest, toughest episodes we’ve ever made. As for whether Cassio is an ally or an enemy of the Doctor, you’ll have to wait and see, but I can promise, it’s one hell of a meeting!”

Chung also shared his excitement about his role in a statement, praising Davies, Gatwa, and his excitement towards audiences eventually seeing his story air:

I’m absolutely thrilled to step into the Whoniverse as Cassio for Season 2! This show is legendary, and getting to be part of this new era feels surreal. Working with Russell and Ncuti has been a dream! This episode is huge - packed with everything Who fans love: heart, adventure, and a touch of madness. I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store - it’s going to be iconic. Get ready!

What Chung's Casting Reveals About Doctor Who Season 15

Season 15 May Go Beyond Season 14's Most Ominious Stories

With Chung having portrayed a misfit MI5 agent in Slow Horses, it is understandable why he would seem like a perfect choice for a darker story. The Apple TV+ series is centered on the agency's administrative purgatory, where disgraced agents are posted, and its employees' unlikely roles in putting a stop to country-threatening cases. Chung plays former hacktivist Roddy Ho, whose technological skills could easily be turned on by his employers if he were stationed anywhere else. However, Cassio is seemingly set to play a much more action-oriented role, given his armored, gun-wielding appearance.

Doctor Who season 14 had several ups and downs, but with the season concluded, its worth looking back and exploring which episodes stood out.

Furthermore, Davies emphasizing Chung's Doctor Who episode being difficult to view raises the question of what the series has in store. While constructed as an entry point for newcomers, Doctor Who season 14's "73 Yards" was a harrowing glimpse at the trauma of abandonment with a brief glimpse at populist politicians. "Dot and Bubble" was a dark, bleak tale of how racism, discrimination, and social media can lead to a civilization's complete collapse. As such, Davies' tease hints that the episode's tone sets high expectations.

Our Thoughts On Chung's Doctor Who Casting

The Casting Continues A Benefit To Its New Production Structure

One highlight of Davies' second Doctor Who tenure has been its casting. Through the production pact with Disney, the series has been able to cast many key stars from recent streaming hits, alongside notable stars of the UK's biggest soap operas, like Gibson, Anita Dobson, and Angela Winter. Alongside talented actors like Miriam Margolyes and Neil Patrick Harris, Gatwa, Golda Rosheuval, and Yasmin Finney played key roles in Netflix hits Sex Education, Bridgerton, and Heartstopper, while Sethu stood out in Andor. As such, Chung's casting is a continuation of this positive trend.

With their statements, many may be eager to see just how Chung's portrayal of Cassio stands out in what could be one of the season's most notable episodes. With season 14 having been constructed as an introduction to the new era, Doctor Who season 15 may have the freedom to take the series into truly unpredictable directions under its expanded writing team.
