Does Monster Hunter Wilds Have Crossplay?

Given the series’ history, it’s only natural to wonder if Monster Hunter Wilds will support crossplay and cross-progression. Wilds is the newest installment in Capcom’s hit monster-hunting series, which made a breakthrough in the Western market with the release of Monster Hunter World in 2018. Since then, the main series expanded with the arrival of the Iceborne expansion for World in 2019 and then the release of Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch consoles in 2021. In 2022, players saw the release of Monster Hunter Rise for PC and, a year later for current and past-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

It’s worth noting that in 2022, Rise also received an expansion called Sunbreak, which substantially expanded the game’s content. Even with all of the content and playtime offered by the main series – disregarding spin-off titles like Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruinthese Capcom games have never had support for crossplay or cross-progression. Now, Monster Hunter Wilds is bringing several changes to its systems, even if maintaining the core of the gameplay, and, with it, renewed hope for some sort of connection between different platforms in an era where most AAA games have it.

Monster Hunter Wilds Will Have Crossplay At Launch

The New Game Will Not Have Cross-Save & Cross-Progression

Despite the absence of crossplay in previous entries, it has been confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds will have crossplay support starting at launch. This means that, once the game is released on February 28, players will be able to connect with hunters on other platforms, apparently seamlessly. The information was confirmed by developer Capcom in an interview with Multiplayer.it. This is a major breakthrough for the series, representing the first title in the franchise to ever allow players to use crossplay to hunt monsters with players on platform families other than their own.

Monster Hunter Wilds introduced plenty of new weapons moves, but the open beta was missing a vital feature to help players train for the full launch.

While the game will have crossplay, a first for the series, it will continue not to support cross-save and cross-progression features. This means that players who start a campaign on a specific platform will be stuck with it. If they desire to play on another platform, they will have to start a brand-new save and campaign from scratch. They will still be able to play with friends on alternative platforms thanks to the crossplay in Monster Hunter Wilds, but their character is not transferable between platforms.

Lobbies Will Be Larger With The Feature

The fact that Wilds has crossplay is unprecedented in the series and a major mark for the franchise moving forward. This will likely bring extra attention to the multiplayer factor available during hunts, which is already vital to some specific monsters. Monster Hunter Wilds will also enable larger player lobbies, with up to 100 hunters at a time. For comparison, World allowed for lobbies of up to 16 players.

The addition of crossplay to the series with its application in Wilds should heavily impact the game’s multiplayer aspect, and potentially revolutionize how hunters approach the game. Monster-hunting is often easier with allies, and with crossplay and 100-player lobbies, Monster Hunter Wilds should be one of the best entries in the series when it comes to finding other hunters to join the fight.
