"Don't Read It While Eating": Marvel's New Daredevil Run Promises to Be a Rather Bloody One
Daredevil: Unleash Hell #1 hit shelves on January 8, and in a recent interview with Screen Rant, writer Erica Schultz discussed what fans can expect from the series, including a bloodier take on Elektra’s Daredevilcompared to her previous works, Daredevil: Gang War and Daredevil: The Woman Without Fear.
Schultz warns fans that her new Daredevil series will deliver intense blood and gore...
Daredevil: Unleash Hell #1—written by Erica Schultz, with art by Valentina Pinti, penciling by Jose Luis, inking by Jonas Trindade, color art by Dee Cunniffe, and lettering by VC's Cory Petit—is categorized as one of Marvel’s “Red Band” titles, meaning its content is intended for mature audiences only.
With the freedom to appeal directly to adults, Red Band titles often feature heightened violence and themes unsuitable for general audiences. The debut issue of Daredevil: Unleash Hell fully embraces its Red Band branding, making it a perfect fit for Elektra and her iteration of Daredevil.
Schultz Teases a Brutal and Uncompromising Daredevil Series
Daredevil: Unleash Hell #1 is Available to Read Now from Marvel Comics
Speaking exclusively with Screen Rant, Schultz discussed the future ofDaredevil: Unleash Hell, warning fans that the series will deliver intense blood and gore—and advising them not to read it while eating. If Schultz’s warning isn’t enough, the debut issue makes it clear. The story opens with Elektra (as Daredevil) ruthlessly taking down a factory full of drug manufacturers, though it's evident she’s holding back. While the criminals are left bloodied, Elektra’s history proves how effortlessly and remorselessly she can kill.
However, since adopting the Daredevil mantle, her restraint comes at a cost—leaving her wounded, in pain, and forced to stitch herself back together. The real “loads of blood and gore” arrive with the reappearance of longtime Daredevil foe, Muse, who manipulates a young artist into murdering her instructor. Muse has always been known for his disturbing tactics of using either dead humans for his “art” installations, or painting murals in the blood of people he’s held in captivity. Though Muse is dead in Daredevil: Unleash Hell, he is still able to influence the world of the living to create gory and brutal art in an attempt to taunt Daredevil.
Schultz: Because Unleash Hell is a Red Band title, you can expect loads of blood and gore. Valentina Pinti, Jose Luis, Dee Cuniffe, and Clayton Cowles are doing an incredible job on the art, colors, and letters. There's no cursing or nudity (this isn't Marvel Max, y'know), but you'll see people be decapitated and disemboweled. Just…don't read it while eating. That's my best advice.
Schultz Couldn't Have Picked a Better Villain for New Daredevil Series
Daredevil: Unleash Hell Marks Elektra's First Face-Off Against Muse
Muse is the perfect villain to center a Red Band title around, as his previous arcs were already dark and demented without the need for general audience censorship. Positioning him as Daredevil’s main nemesis in Daredevil: Unleash Hell makes it easy to see where the decapitation and disembowelment will come into play. With Muse’s brutal tactics combined with Elektra’s lethal fighting style—honed from her time as an assassin trained by The Hand—Hell’s Kitchen is about to become ground zero for some truly epic battles.
Muse’s prominence in Daredevil: Unleash Hell comes at the perfect time for both comic fans and MCU audiences, as he is set to make his live-action debut in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. With the MCU preparing to introduce Muse to a whole new demographic, Schultz’s Daredevil: Unleash Hell promises to be an unfiltered, must-read experience for those eager to explore the villain’s gruesome methods. While Daredevil and Muse have clashed multiple times in the comics, Muse has yet to face off against Elektra’s Daredevil—until now.
