Dr Sonalika Sharma wins Prestigious Award for AI Research in Hernia Surgery

Ludhiana: Dr Sonalika Sharma, a resident from the Department of Surgery at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the esteemed Nabeel Ibrahim Memorial Prize. This prestigious award, given for the Best Original Hernia Surgery Presentation, was presented to Dr Sharma at the 2024 Australia New Zealand (ANZ) Hernia Annual Conference held in Brisbane.
Dr Sharma’s presentation stood out for its innovative approach and thorough research in the field of hernia surgery, earning her recognition on an international platform. The award highlights not only her personal accomplishment but also brings pride to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital for fostering such talent. Her groundbreaking work is expected to contribute significantly to advancements in surgical techniques and patient care in the field of hernia treatment.
Her presentation on “AI-Powered SSI Surveillance,” guided by Dr Ashvind Bawa, Professor of Surgery, won 1st Place, winning a prize of $1000 and free registration to the European Hernia Society Cadaver Lab next year. Moreover, senior resident Dr Tanveer Kaur presented her impactful research on AI in NPWT (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy) and Hernia Surgery, showcasing how artificial intelligence can enhance surgical outcomes.
Adding to the honors, Dr. Ashvind Bawa was invited to deliver three talks at the conference, sharing his insights on the evolving role of AI in surgery and healthcare. Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, Sh. Bipin Gupta said that "These achievements reflect our team's ongoing efforts to explore AI's role in surgery and enhance patient care at DMC&H. We are incredibly proud of our residents for their dedication and for representing Ludhiana and our institute on the global stage."
