Dragon Ball Daima Left Open the Door For Season 2, And We Need It ASAP

Dragon Ball Daima, the sixth anime series based on Akira Toriyama's original manga, produced by Toei Animation, has come to a close. Turning Goku and the rest of Earth's heroes into children once more, the series delivered a blend of action and adventure in such a balance that is guaranteed to satisfy fans of Dragon Ball's many different adaptations. Now that the dust has settled on Daima's final episode, the franchise's ever-growing fan base is wondering what might be next for their favorite Saiyans.

Daima's completion means another period of inactivity has come for Dragon Ball. The long-running Dragon Ball Super manga has re-entered its extended hiatus after returning with a special one-shot chapter this past February, and there is no official confirmation of any anime projects currently in the works. However, given Daima's somewhat sudden and largely open ending, the door has been left wide open for a follow-up season to Goku's latest anime adventure.

Dragon Ball Daima's Ending Wasn't Exactly a Conclusion

There Is Still Time For Another Adventure Before Beerus Arrives on Earth

Though many fans have voiced their support for the continuation of Dragon Ball Super's anime series, rights issues and disagreements between Dragon Ball's anime and manga teams make any potential return unlikely. Luckily, Daima's finale left the door open for a second season of the new hit series, should Toei decide there are more stories left to tell. The most notable, and also obvious, tell that a continuation is on the table comes from the fact that the main cast was never actually seen leaving the Demon Realm during the post-credits scene.

A more substantial cause for optimism is that there is still quite a bit of time before the arrival of Beerus in the series' main timeline of events. The amount of time between the defeat of Buu and the beginning of Dragon Ball Super has always been a contentious topic among fans of the series, though it is likely that four years passed before Beerus arrived searching for the Super Saiyan God.

If You Only Watched Dragon Ball Daima For the Canon, You're Really Missing Out

Dragon Ball Daima has been criticized for its poor handling of Dragon Ball's canon, but it's far too good for that to be a reason to ignore it.

Given that Dragon Ball Daima takes place directly after the Majin Buu Saga, there is still room within the timeline to squeeze in another adventure or two. Just before the final credits rolled on the anime's finale, the fan-favorite unlikely hero, Kuu, told Goku he would give him a call if the Demon Realm ever found itself in trouble again, to which Goku agreed to come help. While fans might have preferred an adaptation of Dragon Ball Super's Moro and Granolah arcs, very few would turn down more demonic adventures.

Key Absences From the Series Leave the Door Wide Open for a Return

Daima Never Made Use of Key Items and Characters

One of the major reasons a Dragon Ball Daima return would be beneficial, not just to the fans but to the series' own reputation, is because a major plot point went unresolved. Early in Goku's adventures with Glorio and Shin through the Demon Realm, the trio stopped at a small shop and purchased a few things. One of those being medi-bugs, which the anime continuously referenced and never made use of by the time the series ended.

Join bugs were shown to have the power to fuse multiple fighters together, and when fans expected a new fusion to steal the spotlight in the final climactic battle with Gomah, one never arrived. Chekhov's Gun, a popular narrative principle, states that when an element is introduced into a story, it should always play some sort of role later down the line. A second season of the anime would be a perfect opportunity to act upon the medi-bugs which went unused.

Other characters can also be given larger roles in a second adventure through the Demon Realm, like Gohan. The star of Dragon Ball's Cell Saga and, more recently, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, was the Buu Saga's strongest fighter, and considering Daima's relation to that arc, his involvement in a future confrontation would only be fitting. Unfortunately, however, there are obstacles the series will have to traverse if a continuation is on the table.

Questions About Canon Might Interfere With Any Continuation of Daima

Daima Would Have Some Explaining to Do if It Returns

Since Dragon Ball Daima ended, the series' enormous fan base has been at war over whether the anime is canon. Though never outright stated to be the case, Akira Toriyama's involvement in the production, as well as recent comments from series' producer Akio Iyoku, suggest that Daima is in fact canon to Dragon Ball's main timeline. However, operating under that timeline leaves the anime with questions that need answering, specifically regarding Goku's use of Super Saiyan 4.

The return of the fan-favorite form was well-received by viewers, though it created quite the issue of continuity. When Beerus arrives on Earth years later, Goku tells the God of Destruction that he has no transformations left after Super Saiyan 3, and the form is never seen or heard of during Dragon Ball Super. Any continuation of Daima would likely need to answer questions about not only Super Saiyan 4, but also how Kibito fused again before appearing during the Golden Frieza arc later down the line.

The Future of Dragon Ball Is Bright, Despite the Uncertainty Surrounding It

Though Dragon Ball Super is stuck in an extended rights dispute and Dragon Ball Daima marks the final contribution Akira Toriyama made towards his masterpiece series, the future of Dragon Ball remains bright. Series' producer Akio Iyoku revealed in a recent interview that he expects the franchise to continue on for decades to come, and that he and others are diligently planning for future releases. Whether that includes anime, video games, manga, or something new, fans can rest assured they haven't seen the last of Goku and friends.

Dragon Ball Daima Is Finished, But Did the Anime Live Up to Expectations?

Dragon Ball Daima has come to its conclusion after a highly successful 20-episode run, but considering expectations, did it live up to the hype?

If they choose to revisit the series, Dragon Ball Daima has very much left the door open for a new season or sequel anime. Though the cast explored areas of all the Demon Worlds, there are always further lands and stronger enemies to fight, as the last four decades of Dragon Ball have proven. Though there is no official confirmation of a new project in the works, Iyoku hinted towards an announcement to come in 2025. In the meantime, Dragon Ball Daima's English dub features both new and familiar voices, and is a worthy reason for a re-watch.
