Dylan’s New Gretchen Twist Means Every MDR Employee Is Now Facing The Same Terrible Problem In Severance Season 2

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 6.

Severance season 2 has put every one of its major characters in the same difficult position after Dylan and Gretchen's recent developments. Severance's cast of characters already share a lot of common woes, from their subjugation under Lumon's authoritarian work rules as Innies to their Outies navigating lives as severed people. This is perhaps what makes both Severance's Innies and Outies feel so strong as a group, with each of them being able to lean on the other inside work and unknowingly relate to one another outside of Lumon's offices.

In Severance season 2, one particular issue has been raised via several different characters that draw even more comparisons between them. After Severance season 1's ending and the big reveals of the show, the work problems and the uprising against Lumon have only continued for the MDR workers. However, relationships have proven to be increasingly difficult for each character, as has finally been proven by Dylan's developments with Gretchen in Severance's Outie Visitation Suite from season 2, episode 6.

MDR's Innies All Now Have Complex Romances With Outies Or Non-Severed People

Relationship Issues Are Increasingly Common Among Severance's Characters

As alluded to, it is the incredibly complicated love lives of Severance's many cast members that bond them together after season 2, episode 6. The reveal that Ms. Casey is Mark's supposedly dead wife Gemma already complicated his budding romance with Helly before Helena Eagan's separate pursuit of both Innie and Outie Mark only made the now love pentagon even more twisted. Then there is Irving, whose workplace romance with Burt was changed in Severance season 2, episode 6, as their Outies got to know each other more, not to mention the addition of John Noble's non-severed character, Fields.

Finally, Dylan's relationship with Gretchen took a turn in Severance season 2, episode 6. The two are married outside Lumon, yet the Outie Visitation Suite allows Gretchen to get to know Dylan's Innie. It is evident that the two have some marital issues regularly, allowing Gretchen to essentially reset her relationship with Innie Dylan as highlighted in the most recent episode of the show. Now, all four members of the MDR crew in Severance have complicated relations with Innies, Outies, and non-severed people alike.

Why Gretchen Lies To Dylan's Outie About Seeing His Innie

Perhaps one of the biggest wrinkles in Dylan and Gretchen's relationship in Severance season 2, episode 6 was the latter's decision to lie to the former's Outie. Outie Dylan asks Gretchen how the visitation went, prompting her to reply that it was canceled by Lumon. As evident in the episode, this is not true, with Gretchen and Innie Dylan only shown growing closer together. Naturally, the question here is why Gretchen lied to Outie Dylan.

The reason for this likely links to the above complex feelings that Gretchen must have. After being married for so long with all the complications of a real relationship, Dylan and Gretchen's marriage seems strained. With Innie Dylan, however, none of that history is present, allowing Gretchen to essentially meet a blank-slate version of the man she loves, still with his personality and humanity intact. Admitting the benefits and advantages of this to Outie Dylan would likely be difficult for Gretchen, explaining why she lied to him in Severance season 2, episode 6, only furthering the show’s tangled relationship dynamics.
