Euphoria Season 3 Cast Update Confirms 2 More Exits, Key Season 2 Character Will Return

A Euphoria update confirms that another returning star is confirmed, but two actors won't be reprising their roles in the new episodes. The HBO teen drama focuses on the lives and struggles of a group of teens, with Zendaya's Rue taking center stage as a troubled teen trying to find her place in the world. Euphoria's ensemble cast also features Hunter Schafer, Angus Cloud, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demie, Eric Dane, Barbie Ferreira, and Maude Apatow.

As Euphoria prepares for filming to begin, Deadline revealed that three more cast members won't return. Despite adding several new actors to its ensemble, Nika King and Algee Smith are absent from the recent casting announcement after having portrayed Rue's mother, Leslie Bennett, and Cassie's former love interest, Chris McKay. On the other hand, Rosalía, Marshawn Lynch & Kadeem Hardison will join the cast. While Dominic Fike was absent from Deadline's report, Variety later confirmed that the actor would reprise his role as Rue's friend Elliot.

With Smith and King confirmed to be absent from Euphoria season 3, it is unclear how their absences will affect Rue's journey. Smith's absence is understandable since he had been largely absent after Chris broke up with Cassie. Especially as Cassie faces her own challenges following her chaotic season 2 relationships, Chris' part in the story may be complete.

Leslie's absence will be felt the most among the missing listings. Leslie is a key part of Rue's life and, despite their complicated, volatile moments and her season 2 ultimatum, Leslie has done her best to dedicate herself to making her daughter's life better on the road to recovery. Even though Euphoria season 2 ended with Rue clean and hopeful for a new future, a potential relapse would see her facing this struggle without the support of her mother. Plus, Elliot's continued presence could complicate matters due to the love triangle forming between him, Rue, and Jules (Hunter Schafer).

With a four-year absence between seasons, it remains to be seen whether Euphoria season 3 can recapture the spark that made the first two installments a success. Alongside this update, the series has to deal with Ferreira not returning due to creative differences, Storm Reid's departure over schedule conflicts, and Cloud's passing in 2023. When paired with the negative reception to Levinson's TheIdoland potential waning interest, the series faces an uphill battle.

Despite this, certain absences do offer opportunities that could benefit the series' return. Reid and King's absences indicate that Euphoria season 3 could offer a fresh start for Rue and Jules, presenting them with new challenges.
