MANILA – Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. settled for fourth place in the Premier division of the O2C Doeberl Cup Chess Championships held on April 17 to 21 this year in Canberra, Australia.
The 63-year-old Antonio placed third with 6.5 points, in a tie with Australian GM Zhao Zong-Yuan and Polish GM Jacek Stopa of Poland, but he ended up fourth after the tiebreak.
Indian GM Guha Mitrabha secured 7.5 points to win the tournament followed by compatriot Das Sayantan with the 7.0 points.
"I would like to dedicate my victory to my family, my friends and to God," Antonio said in an interview on Wednesday.
He finished second in the rapid event of the Melbourne International Open Chess Championships last April 11.
Meanwhile, compatriot Jose Efren Bagamasbad ranked 35th with 4.0 points in the FIDE Standard chess event. Antonio and Bagamasbad will join the Sydney International Open on April 23 to 27.
They will also compete in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) World Seniors Chess Championships scheduled from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2 in Puglia, Italy. (PNA)
