Forget Goku, Dragon Ball Super May Have Outed Universe 7's Ultimate Hero Already

The Dragon Ball Super manga series has recently become a trending topic among anime fans once again, thanks to the rumors about its imminent return. After the release of its special one-shot, which served as an homage to Gohan and his superhero persona, fans are more ready than ever before to know what happens next.

While nothing about the return of the series has been confirmed, the information already available to fans keeps revealing more about future events. One of these impactful revelations can be found in chapter #103, during which the nature of Gohan’s Beast Mode was explained. This small but significant detail might have already revealed who will be the ultimate hero of the series, and it is not Goku.

Gohan’s Beast Mode Can Become Far Stronger

Goku’s Son Revealed That He Could Break His Limits

Introduced during the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film, the latest entry in the franchise’s long list of movies, Gohan Beast is the half-Saiyan’s most powerful transformation. This form, implied to be a direct evolution of his Ultimate state, unleashes the hidden potential inside the warrior, giving them a power comparable to that of a deity. According to Piccolo, after Gohan unlocked this technique, he became just as powerful as Goku and Vegeta, who have been using divine Ki for several years. Still, the series might have implied that the Beast Mode is still not at max power.

Dragon Ball’s Buu Saga Is Great, But I Love Gohan Too Much to Fully Enjoy It

Dragon Ball's Majin Buu Saga features many of the series' most iconic moments, but one last minute change has left me soured on it.

In chapter #103 of the manga, Gohan explained that his new transformation worked by making him approach the limit of anger, to the point he is about to lose control. Right before the Saiyan enters a berserk-like fury, he stops, unleashing the power of his emotions while still retaining his consciousness. This form works similarly to Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan, as it becomes stronger the angrier its user gets, but also makes them more brutal and animalistic. This revelation suggests that Gohan could still become stronger by letting his anger overtake him.

Gohan Could Become Frieza’s Final Opponent

Ever since he was introduced in chapter #87 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, Black Frieza has been hyped as the ultimate opponent for the heroes. While not yet confirmed, the series heavily implied that, thanks to this new form, the Galactic Emperor had become the strongest villain ever, capable of defeating Goku and Vegeta at full power without breaking a sweat. If the Z Warriors want to defeat this imposing enemy, they might need someone with a power beyond their imagination, such as a rampaging Gohan.

Goku’s son has been known for losing his temper in the past, resulting in his power increasing drastically. This was the case during the Cell Games, as Gohan was only able to defeat the villain by accepting his anger and unlocking Super Saiyan 2. Something similar might occur during the final battle against Frieza. With no other options left and seeing his friends suffer in front of his eyes, Gohan’s anger might lead to a boost in Beast Mode’s power. This power-up might be enough to defeat Frieza, even in his mighty new transformation.

Dragon Ball Super Loves Gohan

He Has Become the Series’ Main Focus

Although Goku is without a doubt the most iconic Dragon Ball character of all time, the manga series has been focusing on Gohan and his story lately. Beginning with the Super Hero arc, Kakarot’s son has been seen as the main hero and protector of Earth, ready to defend the planet even when his father is away. His fight against Cell Max was more than just a loving tribute to one of the franchise’s best arcs; it also served to let fans know that Goku and Vegeta were no longer the most powerful Saiyans.

The recently published special chapter confirmed this theory, by making sure fans would see Gohan as the series’ true superhero. The story of this short entry perfectly exemplifies how his bravery, kindness, and selflessness make him an inspiration to those around him. Gohan being the one to save the universe from the most heinous villain ever seems like a reasonable ending to his character arc. This way, the manga could fulfill one of Akira Toriyama’s wishes, replacing Goku with Gohan as the new protagonist.

While the idea of Gohan taking his rightful place as Goku’s successor might be an appealing idea, the Dragon Ball Super might not reveal his future for a long time. Nevertheless, making him the ultimate hero would be an amazing choice, both narratively and as a tribute to Toriyama’s original idea for the character.
