Forget Heroes in a Half Shell, TMNT Just Gave Its Stars a Shockingly Dark New Name

WARNING: Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7Anyone who grew up watching one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' many animated series is familiar with their endearing "Heroes in a Half Shell" nickname. However, the comics have now replaced that familiar title with a much darker one that redefines their status quo in a devastating way, revealing how far the turtles have fallen in their current story.

AIPT has shared a preview of IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 by Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra, in which the ninja turtles are on the run after the Foot Clan has taken over New York's police force with help from new villain Hieronymus Hale. Having been brutally beaten by these corrupt cops, the turtles flee to the sewers.

As they do, a billboard is shown that reads: "Killers in a Half Shell". This nickname is a play on their classic moniker, but with a haunting update to fit the city's newfound hatred of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The iconic "Heroes in a Half Shell" nickname originated in the theme song of the '90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, the name being changed to call the turtles "killers" shows that the comics are taking a much more bleak turn than that series ever did. As seen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #6, the Foot Clan has full control over New York in its crusade to eliminate mutants, and the people have sided with them. While the turtles being outsiders is a staple of most continuities, they'd finally managed to gain some respect in IDW's universe before the Foot Clan promptly squandered it.

Those who grew up with the TMNT will be shocked to learn that the turtles were hardened assassins with an affinity for violence in the classic comics.

Overall, Jason Aaron's new era for the TMNT has been darker than any other, with the exception of the original comics and their violent tone. Here, the turtles have all taken a turn for the worse after being separated for an extended period. Raphael spent time in prison, Michelangelo's no longer his usual partying self, Leonardo committed murder when left unattended, and Donatello is thoroughly traumatized after his time in a mutant zoo. Moreover, they're now constantly at each other's throats. The TMNT's new branding as killers is just the cherry on top, proving that they've officially hit rock bottom as a group.

With their city no longer accepting the ninja turtles after the Foot Clan's takeover, the ninja turtles have no choice but to hide elsewhere until the heat dies down. They're taking refuge in the sewers of Newark, New Jersey, as opposed to their usual sewer beneath New York. They will undoubtedly have a long way to go if they want to return home, as it won't be easy to mend their reputation from getting framed as killers. Until then, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have replaced their beloved title with one that's representative of their gritty new era.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 is available February 26th, 2025 from IDW Publishing.
