Former American Idol Judge Is Traveling To Space After Major Career Milestone Amid Signs Of A Return To The Show & Concerns About Carrie Underwood
Former American Idol judge Katy Perry will soar to new heights as she embarks on a trip to outer space this spring. Katy left the singing competition series after seven seasons and was replaced by Carrie Underwood for American Idol season 23. Carrie has faced some backlash for performing at President Donald Trump's inauguration, while Katy's first post-show album didn't perform as well as she'd hoped, leading some to believe that she might return to the series. However, in May, she'll begin the U.S. leg of her Lifetimes tour, her first tour since she joined American Idol in 2018.
Katy Perry will soar to new heights as she embarks on a trip to outer space this spring.
In an Instagram post, Blue Origin announced that Katy will be one of six women in the New Shepard NS-31 crew launching this spring. The other women include former NASA rocket scientist, entrepreneur, and global STEM advocate Aisha Bowe; bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen; award-winning journalist, co-host of CBS Mornings, editor-at-large of Oprah Daily, and the host of Gayle King in the House on SiriusXM radio Gayle King; film producer Kerianne Flynn; and Emmy Award-winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author, pilot, and Vice Chair of the Bezos Earth Fund Lauren Sánchez, who brought the mission together.
Blue Origin said the mission is the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program, and the 31st in its history. The program has flown 52 people above the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. This will be the first all-female flight crew since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963, making her the first woman in space. In Katy's Blue Origin bio, she stated she's honored to be a part of Blue Origin's first all-female crew. She hopes her journey encourages her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, and others, to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively.

American Idol is a reality singing competition that adds to the international "Idol" brand, conceived initially in the U.K. as Pop Idol. Holding massive auditions across the U.S., American Idol invited several contestants to perform in front of a panel of judges that would determine whether or not they'd go on to future rounds for a chance at competing in the fully televised premiere of the show. Contestants are voted off each week by American participation via voting through various mediums, and the winner of the competition would be given a contract with a record label to secure a future as America's next musical idol.
