G.I. Joe and Transformers Are Colliding, Creating the Universes' Ultimate Weapon

WARNING! Spoilers ahead for G.I. Joe #4 The worlds of G.I. Joe and Transformers have never been more connected thanks to the Energon Universe, and now Cobra Commander’s latest weapon continues that trend. Bringing together Cybertronian technology with a classic piece of G.I. Joe lore, the ultimate enemy of the Real American Heroes has devised a weapon that could give him control of everything.

G.I. Joe #4 – written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Tom Reilly – picks up the story from last issue’s cliffhanger, in which Duke, Risk and Baroness attempted to protect Dr. Archibald Monev from being kidnapped by the Crimson Twins, Tomax & Xamot.

Ultimately, Duke and his team fail their mission, as the Twins’ new Stinger jeep proves to be too much for them to handle. Dr. Monev falls into the grasp of Cobra, but that’s only one piece of the Commander’s plan, as he also manages to acquire Monev’s Brainwave Scanner for his new ultimate weapon.

Gathering the forces of Cobra together at Destro’s MARS Industries HQ, Cobra Commander finally unveils his plan: he’s going to combine Cobra’s store of Energon, the recovered shard of Cybertron from G.I. Joe #1 and the Brainwave Scanner into a new weapon dubbed a “Brainwave Bomb.” This new bomb won’t just explode, however, but will infect everyone in the blast radius and essentially make them devoted servants to the Cobra cause. With such a weapon at his disposal, the Commander could easily achieve what many a supervillain has tried in the past, and truly take over the world.

Cobra Commander has made use of much Transformers tech since making his Energon Universe debut in last year’s Cobra Commander #1. The Commander learned much of Cybertronian tech through years of experiments on a captive Megatron, and has developed several weapons since leaving the hidden society of Cobra-La and entering the wider world. Cobra Commander devised an Iron Man-esque blaster that formed to his palm, eventually becoming his entire hand. The Commander also used Energon to power Cobra’s deadly new laser rifles, which killed Rock N’Roll in the G.I. Joe team’s first official mission.

Now, Cobra Commander is poised to be the next deadly threat facing the Energon Universe; he’s certainly made an impact in the pages of G.I. Joe, as the Joe team has barely managed to keep up with Cobra’s attacks. Their first mission was an unmitigated failure, and now the Joes find themselves in the belly of the beast after being taken prisoner by Cobra. Joe #4 ends with Duke telling his team this is exactly where they need to be, but the G.I. Joe team has their work cut out for them in defeating Cobra Commander’s latest Transformers-based weapon.
