Godzilla Really Loves Destroying Cities, And He May Have Found His Next Stomping Ground
One country may want to take cover, because potential plans are in the work to bring Godzilla in to create some new cities to wreck. The King of the Monsters has left his mark everywhere, but there's a place he's barely encountered, and one writer thinks that needs to change.
Writer Ryan North spoke with Godzilla.com to discuss the upcoming crossover event, Godzilla vs. Marvel, and his contribution, Godzilla vs. The Fantastic Four. North discussed his involvement in the series. To close out the interview, North is asked as a Canadian which city would best suit the monster for a story.
Ryan North: Godzilla hasn't spent much time in Canada, you're right! We've gotten off lucky so far. I think we'd need to limit ourselves to coastal cities to have the best Godzilla adventure (sorry Winnipeg) and I'm thinking either Vancouver (high rises, lots to smash) or Victoria (smaller buildings, but prettier smashing). Plus it's a clear shot from the Pacific Ocean to get there. Okay, you've got me thinking about this story - I think Godzilla emerges from the Salish Sea, makes its way through Victoria, and then confronts Vancouver for the finale.
North determined that it would have to be a coastal cities, likely Vancouver or Victoria, both of which have a lot of buildings for Godzilla to smash. North speculates a good Canadian Godzilla story would have him start in the latter city before ending in Vancouver for the finale.
Ryan North Admits Godzilla Needs to Come to Canada Next
Sorry Victoria and Vancouver, It's Just Fair
It's no secret that Godzilla is one of the most well-traveled monsters in fiction. In his film career alone, Godzilla has been all over the world (and in some cases, to the center of it). But his comics have taken the legendary titan further than ever. He's been to space, to Hell, and even to the DC Universe where he fought Superman. Now Godzilla's about to head to the Marvel Universe to take on a swath of iconic characters like Spider-Man and Thor in a series of one-shots celebrating the monster's history with Marvel Comics.
Interestingly enough, North's interview comes right before the King of the Monsters is set to target numerous cities in the United States in Godzilla vs. America. But North's point about Godzilla never really targeting Canada is true as the beast really doesn't have any notable moments going after any of the country's cities. But North makes a salient argument that the King of the Monsters could easily emerge from the Salish Sea and begin a path of destruction that ultimately ends with Godzilla in a dramatic finale in Vancouver.
Godzilla's Taken on Most of the World, It's Time for Him to Go to Canada
Ryan North's Already Done the Hard Part
Sometimes the best Godzilla pitches are the simplest ones. Godzilla in Hell got a lot of mileage out of seeing the icon fight against eternal damnation and Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers united the two franchises for an amazing crossover. The idea of Godzilla destroying Canada is a novel concept and while North's idea is somewhat bare bones right now, a little refining could turn it into a powerful and almost certainly entertaining story.
Godzilla has fought his numerous enemies in some of the most iconic locations in the world. It's only right that Canada has at least one story where its cities serve as one of the monster's battlegrounds. North seems to already have a spark of an idea and it's worth pursuing to see what would really happen if Godzilla came stomping around in the Great White North.
